Book Reviews of Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 3)Book Review: Zsadist and Bella great Combo Summary: 4 Stars
Zsadist is hard core no getting around that and it isn't until the last 3 chapters of this book that he lightens up and that's only a little. Yet, Zsadist is a one hell of a character that you just can't stop reading. Bella is also highly relatable and likable.
For any one who hasn't read the other J.R. Ward books the run down is that Zsadist is the twin bother of Phury. Zsadist however was stolen at birth and raised as a kitchen slave in a Aristocratic Vampire house hold in the 1800. When Zsadist comes of age (meaning turns into a full-fledged 6+ foot 250 lb vampire) in his early 20's the mistress of the house who is one sick (in the head) women takes him as her blood slave. Ward's vampires have to feed off the opposite sex and the Mistress is not mated. Sadly, she is sadistic and cruel and spends a good deal of time beating, raping, drinking from, and traumatizing Zsadist until he is so far gone in the head there isn't really anything to save. Years pass and Zsadist's Brother Phury comes looking for him. Phury is able to save Zsadist but not with out loosing his own leg in the process and Zsadist getting beat repeatedly with a whip across the back and his face nearly cut in half. During the daring rescue Phury and Zsadist have no choice but to drop several feet into the ocean (this means that the wounds they have will not heal or regenerate - salt). Fast forward to the present day and Zsadist is in the warrior class called the Brother hood living in a gothic style mansion outside of Boston with his brother and several other warriors. Zsadist is known for his brutality and is about two steps away from being a card carrying mental case.
Bella who was introduced in the second of Wards books is from the Aristocratic side of the Vampire life and stumbles upon Zsadist by mistake after a visit to the Brotherhood - which again is in the first book - she's blown away by the warrior and admittedly attracted to the alpha male. She's not shy really and knows what she wants so she tries to pursue him. Even though Bella is beautiful Zsadist refuses her, after all Zsadist is not the boyfriend type and has no interest in love making, he doesn't even allow people to touch him.
Bella is kidnapped by the Lessening society and held captive by David or Mr. O. The Lessening society is the Vampires enemies of course and they are pure evil. Usually if they get a hold of some Vamps they kill them right away or torture them, but in this case David decides to keep his catch. She reminds him of his dead wife, the one he beat to death ironically. Lessers in my opinion are the walking dead, brought back to life by the "Omega" and sent out to serve him. The Lessers though still carry what ever sick ideas and tricks they had up their sleeves when they were human and David has plenty. He keeps Bells for 6 weeks, beating and what he preserves to be "loving" her.
Zsadist meanwhile is on a killing spree, tracking down and taking immense pleasure in punishing every Lesser he can get his hands on. Zsadist doesn't want to admit to him self but he's got it bad for Bella and holds on to the distant hope that she is still alive and he can find her. Which he does finally, David though slips threw the cracks.
When Zsadist does get Bella back she is in terrible shape (which includes David's name carved into her belly). Zsadist nurses her back to health, but keeps as much distance as possible. As Bella heals she becomes more demanding of Zsadist and more accretive that he give her so much more. Thus Zsadist's character has to evolve emotionally in order to take on the love affair. On top of all of that David is running around town killing and destroying hoping to get Bella back and as you can guess Zsadist has to have a show down with him eventually.
There are other sub stories involved, such as John Matthew a young brother whom has not gone thru the change, David's sick point of view on things, and Butch a human cop who has it bad for gorgeous rich Vampire named Marissa. Oh and I didn't mention that Phury, Zsadist's brother wants Bella too, so yep there is love triangle.
That's the thing about Wards books she has so many other stories going on at the same time it can be aggravating since her main characters are so involved to begin with. Ward traps you though, if you don't follow the story line of the other characters then in the next book you won't really know what's going on - ahhhh tricky.
