Book Review: A good read

I have to say, I had issues with the book when I first started it. The opening, a rape scene, was disturbing and hard to read (as it should have been, given that it was the author's memoir about being raped), but if felt to me like bad writing and not a recounting of acutal events. It was what came after that I had trouble with. Within the first 50-70 pages, Sebold tangents a lot. She goes back and forth from her past to her present story. I'm cool with a flashback, but every page to two pages just got highly annoying. Having said that, once she moved on to dicussing her life at Syracuse after the rape, the book got much better. It was clearer, more organized, and less scattered in general. That is the point you really get hooked to her story - where you truly feel for Sebold's situation and you really want to know what happened to her. Overall, it was a touching memoir and well worth the read, but don't excited quality writing.
