Book Reviews of Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual

Book Review: best manual for Leopard
Summary: 5 Stars

Computer manufacturers stay away from publishing manuals which you can hold in your hands. They prefer on-line instructions, FAQs, hints, etc. which are quite useful in most cases, but they cannot take a place of well written, comprehensive manuals. When you use on-line help, you are looking for one particular function or solution. Manuals give you the overall, larger pictures, and you learn things that you didn't realize existed. However, not all manuals are created equal. I've read (and own) several of them on Leopard; some are good, others are mediocre. But this manual by David Pogue just outclasses all others, in depth, in comprehensiveness, in organization, you name it. And his humor (more understated than "in your face") does make the book easy to read. If you were to pick one book on Leopard, this definitely should be the one!

Book Review: A lot of information
Summary: 4 Stars

I have not read the book through. I use it as a reference on an as needed basis. So far, I've used it to find how to move files to and from iTunes, help with Time Machine, and with Safari. It has served as a good source of information. There is a lot of information, particularly dealing with pictures, videos, and music that I will probably never use.
When I've needed some extra information it has served me well. I bought the applecare extended warranty and use it for most questions, but if you did not want to spend the extra money for the warranty this book is probably a must have--or something like it. The reason I did not give it 5 stars was because I don't know the value of all the material which I haven't read or used. It could well deserve 5 instead of 4.

Book Review: Everything You Need to Know about Leopard
Summary: 5 Stars

This is really a great book. I bought a few Apple Leopard books from Amazon and this is the best of the three. It has everything you need to know in a quick reference format. Lockups, booting to a command line, Grey Screen, How to's and everything to get you out of a jam etc... If you want to get one Leopard book you can use and get information quickly to solve a problem this is it. There is also a lot of great information that can be used to become a more proficient user or to enhance your computing experience (things you never thought of that are very useful). The book is actually very interesting and makes for good night time reading to get you fired up for tomorrow morning in front of the computer. Highest Recommendation - A++++

Book Review: useful material, though no need for the snide attitude
Summary: 3 Stars

I have found this book to be very useful as it is detailed and comprehensive, with great keyboard shortcut references.

I do not care for the snide comments about Microsoft and Windows as they serve no purpose and detract from the value of the content. It also reinforces the notion that Mac users are somehow superior to Windows users, which also serves no purpose. Everyone has the freedom to choose what they use, let's respect that.

There are a number of errors that I have encountered so far, most typographical or grammatical, with a few errors of information.

Overall a good value as a reference manual.

Thanks for the grammar corrections, to my review, by commenter H. Carlile.

Book Review: The answer to Mac questions
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is terrific to find out what the Mac can do, and how to do it. I've had the Mac and the book for about a month now, and it's really helped me bridge the gap from disgruntled XP owner to delighted Mac owner. It's 900 pages and it has a good index to find the answer to specific things you want to learn to do. The author really knows the Mac and writes in a tutorial fashion, making it easy for the modest to moderately competent user to understand. The book is far superior to using the Apple web site to learn to do Mac "stuff". With the book, you can mark the pages, and you don't need to be online, unlike the skimpy online tutorials.

Highly recommended, if you want to get more from your Mac, and do more.
