Book Reviews of Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing ManualBook Review: Not sure who benefits from this Summary: 1 Stars
I am not a computing neophyte by any stretch of the imagination, but when a family member recently got a Mac I thought this would be a great introduction for them, and a handy reference.
Unfortunately I have not found it to be either. What material is covered is largely superficial and readily surpassed by the material in the various help files. Furthermore there are many omissions. How about some more depth on iPhoto? Or other commonly used applications or functions?
I didn't expect an in-depth treatise on the Mac OS... but I did expect something that would address common questions and concerns.
Book Review: Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual Summary: 4 Stars
Well, once again David Pogue has made a new Apple product comprehensible!
The book is already too big! But one more thing it needs is better support for foreign languages. I know how to enter umlauts and accents and special characters for the western European languages Mac has always supported, but what do I do if I need to type a few words of Greek or Hebrew (which I can read) or Chinese (which I can't)? The need is there - I find that very few people know to do option-u and then o to get an umlaut o - particularly people with Macs who've recently escaped the English-only world of the Slough of DOSpond.
Book Review: Surprised at how easy it was Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first time I ever ordered anything from Amazon and did so because I finally invested in a Macintosh and really needed the $35 manual but didn't want to pay full price. So I found one that was "used" and since it was only $1.59, I decided to take a chance. Well, this so called "used" manual came to me practically brand new. And right away too, with no problems. Am very happy with how the whole thing was handled and how I was kept informed of what was happening. This manual is great and it very easily helps me whenever I need it. Thank you Amazon. This used book is just as good as a new book.
Book Review: Mac OS X Leopard Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book extremely helpful. Although Mac is the easiest computer to operate, I still had a million questions and nary a booklet. They do have classes but in a city far, far away. I will be honest, I have scanned this book. I have not memorized it nor do I claim to be an expert; however, this is what I do with all "how to" books. For me this works in that it gives me an idea of all the functions and from there when I need to know a specific thing, I just refer back to the manual and find my answer.
They were correct, Mac OS X Leopard is the book that should have been in the box.
Book Review: Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
Not a book you curl up with by the fire. This one you keep next to your keyboard and when you wonder, "Can I do this? How do I do this?" You grab it and within seconds (sometimes minutes) you're doing it! I'm pretty comfortable with my Mac but like any other platform there is so much it can do that is not readily apparent. This book covers it. If you're new or if you've got years of experience this book is a must have. The guy is pretty entertaining in the way he writes as well. No need to be so serious about capturing a screen shot for pete's sake. Buy the book you won't be sorry.
