Book Reviews of Mac OS X Tiger: Missing Manual

Book Review: Pretty Good Tutorial
Summary: 5 Stars

Having switched from a PC a year ago and having suffered through 12 months with no manual, it is a relief to have it. It is written in plain English, very basic intro to Tiger OS X and should absolutely have been provided to customers free with the computer. Apple is too cute in assuming everyone, of course, is intuitive about "getting" its system. If you've spent much time in PC land it is a huge transition. This book is great because it assumes no knowledge and provides basic definitions. I also bought another "Missing Manual" for iPhoto and that was helpful, as well.

Book Review: Solid manual, but Amazon's is ?out of date?
Summary: 4 Stars

Well worth the investment for those new to the OS. As a recently-converted Windows user, this has helped me find some pretty slick tricks in Tiger (though most of this can be found out just by browsing the web). The current version (at my local bookstore) however, is a May 2007 printing. If this is indeed the 2005 version, you will be missing out on a significant chunk of information, inluding up-to-date "how to's" for using most of the included software. Just a heads up (though it could just be that Amazon has been too lazy to update the edition in the site text).

Book Review: BEST BUY!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased my first mac 8 months ago, and in the meantime was using only the most basic functions, using the online help. However, buying this book has opened up a whole new world of what the mac can do. I can see now why mac users are so hooked on macs, beyond the obvious virus-minimisation benefits. This book is easy to read and follow, covers the subject matter most comprehensively and, as the title of the series says, should have been in the box. Buying this guide is the best decision, as now I can get the most out of owning the mac. Well done David Pogue!!

Book Review: Tiger Missing Manual Very Helpful
Summary: 4 Stars

I have found the manual helpful, although not all information exactly matches up to what I find on my machine. I've learned a great deal, and can't believe that computers are shipped without these kinds of manuals included. At times I think I'm in over my head, but I can see how over a period of time things that seemed irrelevant or confusing will fall into place when needed. Certainly most of the manual is clearly written, and has increased my ability to utilize the machine at a much higher proficiency than if I had used trial & error & help menus!

Book Review: A Valuable Reference
Summary: 4 Stars

Having finally gone, kicking and screaming, into OSX from OS9, it's reassuring to have a hefty reference book for a new-to-me Mac OS. Just seeing it on the shelf is confidence inspiring. It's aided me in several OS changeover crises... if not giving me the actual answer, it provided the increased understanding or a vital clue to work it out myself. If there is a gripe with this book, it would be in the index. I stumbled around there a bit and can't help but think some improvement are in order. It's the "search engine" of the book, after all.
