Book Reviews of Machida Karate-Do Mixed Martial Arts Techniques

Book Review: Review
Summary: 5 Stars

This review was written by [...] contributor Don Bluedorn:

Ahh, Daniel-san, karate is cool again, thanks in large part to the MMA successes of Lyoto Machida. Machida, the son of a Japanese Shotokan Karate master, has published a new book detailing how to use many of the classical Shotokan striking techniques in MMA competition (and, with a few tweaks, karate competition or street combat). You won't find any hokey interpretations of Heian Shodan in this book. Instead, it's packed full of practical set-ups and combinations using traditional Shotokan striking techniques. Who knew that the lunge punch and ridge-hand strikes were 21st century techniques?

The book is organized into 7 main categories: Striking Attacks, Intercepting Attacks, The Clinch, Attacking the Guard, Attacks from Dominant Control, The Guard, and Escapes. In addition to his Shotokan foundation Machida has trained in other styles such as Sumo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the book is sprinkled with basic techniques from these styles as well (for example, a very basic guillotine escape while in guard). These discussions round out the book and provide a good sense of the other skills needed to compete in MMA, but I don't think that they are at the same level of sophistication as the striking discussions. If you want to learn how to escape the guillotine, you'd probably be better off to pick up a set of Pedro Sauer's White-to-Blue DVDs or a copy of Saulo Ribeiro's Jiu-Jitsu University.

Machida shines when he's explaining how to effectively use classical Shotokan techniques in competition. He assumes that the reader knows how to throw a punch and a kick - there already are lots of books explaining those basic details. He goes the next step and explains how to employ the basic techniques in combination to overwhelm and destroy the competition. An excellent example is the "Rear Front Kick to Lunge-Step Jab" which is presented very early in the book. Machida takes two very basic techniques that a 6 week white belt knows, and shows how to combine them with simple footwork to secure a dominant angle of attack on your opponent. Machida moves on from pure stand-up techniques to show a wide variety of striking attacks against opponents employing ground game skills (something that classically trained karateka rarely, if ever, get to practice). And, there's plenty of action for the studs who don't want to be bothered with basic kick-punch combinations. Check out the Flying Punch (Cartwheel Pass) method for passing the open guard!

At the outset of the book, Machida candidly warns that it is not possible to effectively learn martial arts from a book, no matter how well done, and I completely agree with him. No book can replace a qualified instructor and willing training partners. However, Machida Karate-Do, Mixed Martial Arts Techniques is an excellent complement to any good learning environment. I think that both classical karateka and MMA competitors will find a wealth of information that they can use to improve their striking games.

Summary of Machida Karate-Do Mixed Martial Arts Techniques

Lyoto Machida, son of karate master Yoshizo Machida, is one of the top-ranked mixed martial arts competitors in the world. After earning his karate black belt at thirteen, he mastered a number of other martial arts disciplines, including sumo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Combining techniques from the various disciplines to form an unorthodox and highly effective fighting style, Machida took the martial arts world by storm, defeating legendary mixed martial artists such as BJ Penn, Rich Franklin and Tito Ortiz.

Now, for the first time, Machida divulges the secrets to his revolutionary fighting system. Detailing everything from stance to complex combinations to elaborate counterattacks to intricate ground fighting tactics, Machida has left no stone unturned. In Machida Karate-Do, Lyoto Machida teaches martial artists his unique fighting system, bringing them to the next level of competition.
