Book Reviews of Madness: A Bipolar LifeBook Review: Interesting and painfully self-absorbed Summary: 3 Stars
I like this book despite the repetition. I thought she spent much time describing recurring episodes of both mania and depression to the point I was getting tired of the words "crazy" and "mad"; and I also think she is a talented writer with an ability to paint an emotional picture vividly. I found it to be a moderately interesting book that gives a detailed description of the feelings of a person with severe bipolar illness.
Book Review: Inside View Into Bipolar Type I Summary: 4 Stars
For anyone looking for a first-person account of a life dominated by this disorder. Marya goes to great lengths to include up-to-date information and statistics about Bipolar disorder, particularly Bipolar Type I with rapid cycling. For those who have read her previous memoir, Wasted, you may appreciate the added insight into the eating disorder, especially in relation to the eventually-diagnosed Bipolar disorder.
Book Review: I know the life Summary: 5 Stars
As somebody who does have rapid cycling bipolar I disorder I loved this book because I have lived it. I know all to well what she went thru and the hospitals (I have sweet talked deals with dr's not to put me in & have gone to therapy everyday) and the horrible side effects that some medications have on one. Every account in her book reminded me of something that had happened to me kudos to her for writing it.
Book Review: OK, but rambling and mundane for much of the book Summary: 3 Stars
This book was OK. I had to read about 2/3 of the book before it got interesting. The first 1/2 was nothing but maniacal and wordy descriptions of her episodes. It got a little mundane and rambling. I felt very sorry for those around her - their journey sounded exhausting and would make for a more interesting read. Not terrible, but don't pay the hardcover price. Wait for paperback or even the library.
Book Review: Riveting Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book in 2 days and felt the rush and lows - if you or someone you love has bipolar, depression, PTSD, or even is just plain crazy as as a loon you can hear Marya's voice that imperfection is ok...if anything i learned that much. My favorite quote in this book is this:
"But if you're not trying to be perfect then how do you know if you're doing things right"?
