Book Reviews of Magic Lantern Guides: Pentax K20D

Book Review: Good, comprehensive guide
Summary: 4 Stars

Well, as a matter of fact you can use your camera with Pentax's own manual, but Peter Burian's book is written in a different manner (not, not another booklet for morons :-). You don't have to be an experienced photographer to get thru all possible adjustments (this camera can be customized as you like, hence it's not a toy for beginners) but it's much simpler not to waste time for puzzles and "great discoveries". Just don't read it from the very first page - I used to look for specific solutions in case I was not able solve it myself. Actually I'm not a beginner, but still I found it pretty usable.A good companion to my new camera.

Book Review: Magic Lantern Guides come through again
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know why camera manufacture can't write a decent book for their own product but that is the way it has always been and probably the way it will always be. Fortunately the Magic Lantern Guides are there for our rescue at a very reasonable price. The guide is well laid out, it's easy to find information on most questions I have about the camera. Only drawback is it's all black and white, no color. But the price is right and if they added color it would probably cost twice as much and at the end of the day, the color picture wouldn't add to the quality of the guide.

Book Review: A Lot Better Than The Owner's Manual
Summary: 4 Stars

This guide to using the Pentax K20D camera is a great tool. I keep it in my photo bag for quick reference. You might think that it is just another owner's manual, but it actually is a guide and tip book. It offers easy to find (and read) sections, in-depth notes and a plastic quick-reference card that you can carry in your pocket. I already have this guide bookmarked and highlighted. It has replaced my need to get on the internet to find answers on how to use my camera properly - it's just right there in my camera kit. The book is a real time saver for me.

Book Review: A bit better than the original owner's manual.
Summary: 2 Stars

This book goes step by step into every single feature, function and adjustment possible in this camera, but nothing else. I does explain most in layman's terms.

I would have liked practical examples being showed as illustration for certain features or settings. I think a book of this matter should have them, as is the only practical way to show what this or that does to your pictures and what to expect from every setting and function available.

Book Review: Better than the Instruction book
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very well done, fleshed out version of what is in the instruction book, plus a lot more in the way of shortcuts, pointers, etc. I seem to remember paying about $20 for the book. I see it is now priced at $50. Not much in the context of buying an expensive camera, but it still strikes me as exorbitant, particularly because great chunks of the book are generic, i.e. they appear in all the guides and are not Pentax-specific.
