Book Reviews of Making Color Sing

Book Review: Recommends non-lightfast colors!
Summary: 1 Stars

What are all these 5 star reviewers thinking??? Aureolin and rose madder--Dobie's recommended yellow and red primaries, are extremely fugitive--they fade in a short time.
Because of this alone, the book should be vigorously rejected as coming from dubious authority. Her plan for making colors "sing," by the way, involves placing an occassional bright color in a field of grays or browns, mixed not from earth pigments, but from (fugitive) primaries. It would be irresponsible of me to perpetrate such a book on an unsuspecting public by giving it any stars at all. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have a "zero" stars option. If you want a superior book that will show you much better ways to make colors "sing," get "Perfect Color Choices for the Artist," by Michael Wilcox.

Book Review: 'Making Colors Sing' - Excellent!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

'Making Colors Sing' by Jeanne Dobie is a reference book every watercolorist should own. This book is a helpful resource that can be read over and over again to examine color theory in depth. For anyone who would like to reach new levels in their paintings using color, Jeanne Dobie takes you on an adventure in color techniques and beyond with each exciting chapter. Her pictures are absolutely beautiful and she successfully achieves her goal in 'Making Colors Sing'. I only wish this book was available in hardcover because I am wearing my paperback version out! I look forward to the next book Jeanne may write on watercolor or art technique. This book was very helpful. Thanks a million.

Book Review: too difficult for beginners
Summary: 3 Stars

I'll probably be the Devil's advocate, but this book is far too difficult for beginners. It's a wonderful book, though, but you have to be used to watercolour painting when you take Mrs. Dobie's book. It has lots of interesting advice on how to work with colours and make them sing, after you have had a few classes where the bases of watercolour have been explained in an easier way. Once that step has been taken, Jeane Dobie's book is definitely a must, but if this is the first time you take brushes and colours, good luck to you ! it could easily discourage you like it almost did to me

Book Review: Useful but flawed color reproduction
Summary: 4 Stars

Yes, Dobie's suggestions on how to approach choosing and using colors are inspiring and useful. However, at least in my copy, in many of the illustrations colors were simply not reproduced accurately. In another book this might not be quite so frustrating. But in many places, rather than making the text more explicit she leaves it to the example to make her point. In those cases I sometimes found it difficult to grasp what she meant. Maybe for her next book she should seek another publisher, or at least a different printer.

Book Review: Excellent instruction on using colors
Summary: 5 Stars

Jeanne Dobie's book is well deserved for all the praise given by other reviewers. It teaches you not only pallette selection as most other books but goes deeper into techniques such as glazing which is important for a trasparent medium like water color.I am sure this book would also be very valuable for acrylic painters who often attempt water-color effects with acrylics.I learnt a lot about 'seeing colors' after going through this book. This is indeed original in approach compared to dozens of 'run of the mill' books.
