Book Reviews of Making Color SingBook Review: Jeanne. Where's your next book? Making Color Sing rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
I concur with the sentiments of most of the reviews mentioned here. Jeanne Dobie's book is fabulous. Her emphasis on limited pallette and how to make colors 'vibrate', how to make your own neutral (but vibrating) colors, how to create fabulous browns and blacks....invaluable stuff. I'm ready for another book by Jeanne, where she shows more examples of her work and explains how she achieves effects. Her abstract landscapes are dreamy and beautiful. She's a goddess of watercolor painting.
Book Review: Making Color Sing Summary: 5 Stars
Very easy to read, useful information. I haven't finished reading the book, but I have already applied a lot of the suggestions to my own painting and improved them tremendously. She even suggests a good way to lay out your pallet that makes it easier to find the color you are searching for. I love how she uses a limited pallet and still gets all of the colors necessary to create beautiful paintings. This should be helpful to any watercolor artist, or even painters in other media.
Book Review: Making Color Sing Summary: 5 Stars
This book was suggested by one of my Art Teachers in College. It was in answer to my question in regards to studying more about the use of colour in watercolour painting. It has yielded a wealth of information. I look forward to working my way through the rest of the book and applying the knowledge it contains. Would make a great short course textbook too. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the use of colours in their painting, regarding of the medium they choose.
Book Review: Insights + Inspiration Summary: 5 Stars
Especially helpful for a frustrated watercolorist like me whose work never quite succeeds. Dobie lives up to the promise of the title with well-chosen color explanations and interesting exercise options. Her suggestions for how to strengthen a design gave me a whole new understanding of why many of my pre-Dobie watercolors were so disappointing. This is probably not a book for the complete beginner, although clearly written and with illustrations that do, in fact, sing.
Book Review: Best book on color Summary: 5 Stars
This book taught me how to use color in a way that improved my paintings tremendously. I HIGHLY recommend it. Get a watercolor sketchbook and start mixing colors for a color reference. These colors are luminous. Doing the lessons had been fun and taught me a lot about the knowledge experienced painters have. Maybe not for the rank beginner but certainly for someone who is ready to move to the next level or who does not understand why their paintings seem to be dull.
