Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: Great inspiration! Summary: 4 Stars
This book is a great addition to your bedroom bookshelf. You may not use it every day, but it's there when you need it. Mr. Aucoin shows you how you can transform yourself with makeup. He uses before/after photos and tells you what each of his models (young, old, black, white, asian, even men) should focus on. Many of us have the tried & true, day-in/day-out routine. This book gives you some great ideas on how to break out of the mundane and add some variety and interest into your makeup. His ability to turn celebrities like Lisa Marie Presley, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow and others into completely different looking people should inspire any reader to try something new. In a fit of desperation, before a formal event, I grabbed this book for some ideas. I dug around my makeup collection and found the ingredients to try one of his looks. With his step-by-step directions & illustrations, I was able to totally recreate a more engaging treatment. When my boyfriend picked my up, he looked at me with this surprised look in his eyes. "I can tell by your face; you hate my makeup don't you?" I said. "No. Not at all, it's just so different. So Sexy." He responded. 'Nuff said.
Book Review: Kevyn honey, I just love you!! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the zenith of the arts of both makeup and photography. Kevyn is THE genius of his field. His work and his writing are the essence of using the outside to help comfort and beautify the inside, yes honey, a great face DOES make you feel beautiful inside just like holding a puppy dog when he/she gives you that big wet puppy kiss. I am male, Karra A. von Romanov is my female gender and Kevyn's work was part of the inspiration for the name. I am so deeply indebted to him for sharing his genius and his insights that I wanted my female half to have the initials K.A. Karra is the name of the first girl I kissed and Annastasia von Romanov is a tribute to the true elegance and taste of a bygone time. True elegance and taste are a perfect match for Kevyn Aucoin. This book is somuch more than a book of exterior beauty and it is an extremely uplifting read. Thank you Kevyn for sharing your work and your thoughts with us and thank the publisher for bringing it to us. Also, this is NOT a book in which to skip the forward, Gena Rowlands hits the mark with her very insightful commentary. Sincerely, Karra A. von Romanov
Book Review: a happy costumer Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this book aswell as Kevyn Aucoin's other book Face Forward with the intention of learning how to do make-up properly for my high school formal. I'd been to a professional make-up trial and I wasn't at all happy with the way it had looked so I thought it might be fun to have a try myself.
I found making faces to be the most helpful of the two books as it demonstrates more of the basic techniques ie, shading, eyebrow shaping, contrasting etc. Face Forward was also very helpful in giving some more creative looks though the examples in making faces were a lot more wearable.
I was very happy with both of the books, the instructions are clear and easy to follow, the glossy pictures are of a high quality and the structure of the book is easy to read. It's also fantastic to see the Aucoin doesn't push any of his or other companies products. His unique phylosophies on life and beauty and are a welcome change to the boring and stereotypical. When I ordered the books I was worried they might be a bit outdated but that wasn't the case at all, they were both completely up to the minute.
Book Review: The best beauty books I have ever bought!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is said to be America's #1 book which is 100% true not only the material and content it contains is great but also the paper quality is excellent. It contains 200 pages few excellent tips and 24 great looks!!! along with it also provides each looks description (what makes one look different from the other)Honestly I did not even know so many amazing looks existed. Book also contains not only different shades of lip and eye colors but also how many different textures can they be in e.g creamy, sheer, glossy, mettalic, matte along with their pics. It also contains different kinds of powders, foundations, brushes and how they are to be used. Their are a few quality pictures of Celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Cher, Kate, Marylin Monroe several others but my personnal favourite is Julia Roberts... I would also like to add even though this book is excellent but it is not for beginners especially not for those who do not know anything about make up because it lacks detailed explaination of technique used.
Book Review: Making Faces is a Valuable Tool Summary: 5 Stars
Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin has been a valuable tool to me in my drama classroom. While teaching my students the proper way to apply stage makeup, I have used this book as a reference many times. Making Faces has been especially valuable when teaching my students how to use makeup for corrective purposes, and how to make them look like a celebrity. My students enjoy the pictures of the actresses made up to look like other iconic actresses. They were able to use the pictures as a guide for their own make up plots. Aucoin not only uses many colorful pictures to show the proper techniques and transformations, he also uses step-by-step instructions on how to create the look. Not only did I enjoy the pictures and instructions, but I also enjoyed reading the excerpts about his childhood and career in the makeup industry. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in makeup as an art form, theatrical makeup, and/or for someone who is interested in improving his/her appearance and technique.
