Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: The "art" book of beauty Summary: 3 Stars
"Making Faces" is a step-by-step beauty manual featuring many different looks that have been tested out on real people and celebrities, from the simple to the outrageous. While it may be a very entertaining book to just flip through or a good experimental beauty book, I found that this book wouldn't be the best bet for those who are looking for the basics of beauty. There is a short chapter or so about the essential makeup products and such, but not a whole lot of beauty basics. However, that shouldn't stop your enjoyement of this well-written book. The large size and format of the book makes it easy to read and the pictures are really nice as well. Another good feature is that all of the looks (or "faces"), not only feature detailed step-by-step instructions, but they also have a clear drawing of the procedure right next to it, which would be a plus for people who need a visual aid. Overall, this is a great book, but if you want a book that will show you beauty basics, check out something else.
Book Review: MUST HAVE FOR ANY MAKEUP ARTIST! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is an absolute must-have for makeup artists, and makeup enthusiasts alike. I found the photography to be absolutely beautiful, and the makeovers are exquisite and intriguing. Although I found the overview (the first 68 pages) to be a bit too basic, I still learned a few things and it could be very useful to a non-artist in need of makeup help. The rest of the book is fantastic, especially the Vamp and Bombshell looks. Although I may not do these in real life, they can inspire other ideas and I can borrow to create new looks. I wish it had a more in-depth section on face contouring with more tips and tricks. Kevyn also leaves out steps here and there (probably on purpose) but any makeup artist could figure it out easily. He doesn't go in depth about each full face application, just eyes, brows and lips. I bought this and Face Forward (for more advanced and creative looks than this one has) for about $20 with free shipping and it was definitely worth the money!
Book Review: GREAT BOOK; COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER Summary: 4 Stars
THIS BOOK IS GREAT! COVERS EVERYTHING ABOUT MAKEUP, EVEN HOW TO DO SHADING TO MAKE A NOSE LOOK SMALLER! THE ONLY THING I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT THE AUTHOR DOES NOT SAY WHAT KIND OF MAKEUP HE IS USING ON THE MODEL. FOR INSTANCE I LIKED "THE BOMBSHELL" LOOK WHERE THE MAKEUP ARTIST MADE LISA MARIE PRESLEY LOOK LIKE MARILYN MONROE. I WAS THINKING, IF LISA MARIE PRESLEY CAN LOOK LIKE MARILYN MONROE, THEN SO CAN I. I HAD LONG BROWN HAIR LIKE RAQUEL WELCH IN HER YOUNGER YEARS & I CUT IT OFF & BLEACHED IT BLONDE, LIKE MARILYN. BAD IDEA. EVEN THOUGH I FOLLOWED "THE BOMBSHELL" LOOK DIRECTIONS, BLEACHED & CUT MY HAIR, I STILL DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THAT PICTURE. I HAD NO CLUE WHAT COLOR MAKEUP TO BUY! I THINK IF YOUR INTERESTED IN COPYING ONE OF THE LOOKS IN THIS BOOK YOU SHOULD TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST, BECAUSE EVEN SOMEONE WHO HAS SOME SKILL WILL MOST LIKLEY NOT BE ABLE TO COPY THE LOOK THEY ARE GOING FOR.
Book Review: My favorite how-to, with a ton of ideas and tips. Summary: 4 Stars
With this book, you get introduced to makeup and how it works. Then, you get information on what to use it with and how to apply it, featuring illustrated guides and photo shoot examples. Kevin basically lets you know just about everything that can be done with the complexion, eyebrows, eyes, eyelashes, cheeks and lips. Some of the instruction is advanced - for example, it explains how to cover your eyebrows completely, and draw new ones on. But most of it is for regular lighting and normal life. There are more tricks and ideas in here than any magazine you've ever read. Kevin was one of Hollywood's best and I'm glad he revealed his secrets and techniques for others to use, before he died. I'm not giving this book 5 stars, because there's something important that a reader can't gain by reading the book -- skills with practice. The information is only good for people who get good at using it.
Book Review: You can teach an old dog new tricks Summary: 5 Stars
This book is very informative and fun to read as well. Kevyn has many faces in this book, some famous and some friends. Wonderful before and after pictures with nice stories about each person.Nice stories about how each person met Kevyn, or feels about him. Photos of everyday, evening and extreme makeup. Shots of famous faces Kevyn turned into other famous faces (Lisa Marie Presley as Marilyn Monroe). Very easy to follow the steps needed to create whatever you are looking for. I always wondered how showgirls/guys had those extreme eyebrows for stage..but what did they do the rest of the week at work with those eyebrows? Now I know how they do it! Different skin types are addressed and I loved the shading tricks with foundation. Most looks can be created using what you already own, the book doesnt make you feel like you have "the wrong stuff". Great book for everyone, beginners and experienced.
