Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: Not the book to learn how to apply makeup for beginner or if you want detailed instruction. Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased book years ago before his passing after an appearance on Oprah. He does FABULOUS makeup and this book is more for admiring that....how he can transform celebrites like T-boz, Gweneth Paltrow, etc. He gives you very basic info but not detailed instructions like instead of saying get MAC such and such color lipstick or Nars such and such colored blush he says taupe colored lipstick or orangey shade blush, descriptions like that.....not good if you don't know what blush is orangey or if you need something warm or cool, etc...More high level for maybe an aspiring makeup artist with plenty of makeup experience. Haven't found a good book for makeup application but there are several great tutorials online...you can see real time application and exact products to purchase to achieve a look. More for admiring not teaching. Recommend going online until you find a better how-to book.
Book Review: Great info & instruction in this book Summary: 5 Stars
Aucoin's book provides simple, easy to follow instructions to imitate his techniques. The book begins by walking you through the basics, foundation, concealer, shading/highlighting etc, then on to the treatment of the face. From brows to lips, his techniques are illustrated step by step with commentary on not only how to do the techniques, but also the differences between different types of make-up (like the properties of matte eyeshadow vs. frosted, who knew?) Aucoin then provides instructions to achieve different "looks" from ultra glamour to simple minimalism, there are over 25 different "looks" to learn. Overall, a great book, I think his personal story and commentary is an added bonus - though I think he could lose the plastic surgery section to keep with his overall 'beauty in us all' theme. I highly recommend this book. Best one I've found thus far.
Book Review: Useful book for beginners Summary: 4 Stars
I have had this book for nearly 3 years, and I reference it quite often even though I have had training as a makeup artist.
There are techniques that are shown for contouring the face, lips and eyes, then there are looks that are created to show you
how the techniques are pulled together.
There is a makeover section and also a "great looks" section where he takes iconic looks and transforms celebrities to fit the mold.
Of course there is mention of tools, different cosmetics, and skincare, but what's great is that he breaks each one down and gives you tips and techniques for using them. For instance " Creme foundation can create the look of having a milky complexion and gives the most coverage."
All in all, this is a great book for a first time makeup enthusiast and will become a great tool in your everyday makeup application.
Book Review: FOR DETAILS READ HERE Summary: 5 Stars
This book is well written and easy to understand. It offers lots of useful tips. This book is not geared toward the beginner who does not understand what concealer, foundation, and powder are used for or how they are different. Instead the focus of this book is for the person who already knows the everyday use of different products and would like to understand how they can better utilize them.
Individuality is an emphasis that the author gives, which I felt is a good thing. Sometimes you come across a woman who is truly cool toned but looks wonderful with a warm eye shadow. The only way to find these things is to step outside the general "rules" of make up artistry. Kevyn will help guide you there.
For the beginner I would recommend reading BEAUTY: THE NEW BASICS By Rona Berg. Then you can read this book and fully grasp what Kevyn's telling you.
