Book Reviews of Making Faces

Book Review: Not what I expected
Summary: 2 Stars

I was disappointed with this book. Simply put it does not contain nearly enough information pertaining to technique or application. It is mostly a tribute to Kevin's artistry and the man was a true artist. However it provides little in the way of instruction or guidance when attempting to replicate these looks yourself.

The book is filled with pictures of celebrities and supermodels wearing over the top makeup, makeup that the average woman will never attempt or come close to achieving. In fact, most of the applications shown in this book are best left to true make up professionals unless you wish to look like a clown (or like you just left the MAC counter after the sales girl finishes applying every product they have to your face).

Stunning pictures of already stunning women with little instruction.

Book Review: A book from the make-up genius
Summary: 5 Stars

Sure, the pictures are gorgeous and ofcourse no matter how hard I try at home, I'll never transform myself into Marilyn Monroe without a professional cameraman and hours of airbrushing, but thats not what I loved about the book in the first place. What I did love was Kevyn's easy going style and his loving personality that really came accross and touched me. He never once in the book made any reference to his immense talent... instead, he kept emphasising on the beauty of his subjects. A very refreshing approach by a very unique man. I'd love to meet him even if he wasn't half as succesful and famous as he is today. Dont get me wrong though, the pictures ARE stunning and you'll get a whole load of useful make-up tips. I guarentee though you'll finish loving the man more than his talent!

Book Review: Rating from a current Makeup Artist!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is so wonderful, even for people who are NOT into makeup at all! Even my boyfriend thinks it makes a great coffee table book for everyone to look at. As a makeup artist, this book is like no other. It balances the art of photography, makeup, fantasy and reality. The one thing that I really love about this book the most is that it INSPIRES ME!!!! As a current makeup artist, I agree that there are NO BOUNDARIES when it comes to makeup! It is fun, intruiguing, transforming, and the best part is that it is temporary - you can play with a different look the next day. Kevyn Aucoin is an amazing artist - and this book is a great way to not only learn about makeup, but it allows you to see every possibility available.

Book Review: Better for beginners
Summary: 3 Stars

I was really excited to receive this book after reading so many positive reviews on Amazon. However, after reading it, I did not really feel that I had learned anything new. I have read countless magazines and online articles, and almost everything in the book can now be learned for free via the internet (blogs, websites, Youtube). The pictures are really nice and high-res, but I wish there were more details for specific makeup shades or brands. I'm glad that the book was pretty inexpensive, because I don't see myself referring to it that much in the future--in retrospect, I wish I had looked it over at the library or bookstore before buying it. The book would be most helpful for people who do not know much about makeup.

Book Review: Great for beginners!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this as a gift for a friend who has just begun to take an interest in detailed makeup. I saw that the book had gotten good reviews and many have purchased it.

I looked through it before gifting it to her, and it appears to be a book aimed at those who have a basic understanding of makeup. If you are just starting to take an interest in high-end makeup and would like to get comfortable using quality makeup, this is a good book.

For more outlandish, exotic types of makeup application, I would pair this book with one geared more towards intense eyeshadow instruction.

Some great tips are in the book, though. I am fairly experienced and I learned some new tips!
