Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: Extremely talented, not for everyone Summary: 4 Stars
Kevyn Aucoin is definitely everything his reputation says he is. This book is excellent, informative, and extremely well put together.
The only down side of it is he does not address Asian beauty. He address caucasian, black, and latin, but not asian... so Asians, this will be good if you want to learn about how to work on all the mentioned faces, but your own...not so much. For those asians whose eyes do not pleat (hooded eyes, or non-creased eyes) this book will not help you dress those and rare style of eyes.
His technique is fantastic and I like his commentaries, very down to earth, though his work is outta-this-world amazing.
Book Review: Great Gift Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book as a Christmas present for a friend who is interested in Cosmetology. It made a great gift along with a set of makeup brushes. I couldn't help flipping through it before giving it away though, and I was surprisingly enthralled by it, even though I normally am not very into such things. This book not only has beautiful celebrity photos, but also in-depth, step-by-step instructions on achieving a wide variety of looks from different time periods. It also has a wonderful makeover section with truly unbelievable before and after photos. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the white cover was smudged and dirty upon delivery.
Book Review: Making Faces is by far one of the best! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that I am a huge fan of Kevyn. He was truely the best, and although I didn't know him personally, I know he was truly a master at make-up, THE BEST! It is a down right tradgedy that he is no-longer with us, thank God he left us his "secrets" in works of literature like, Making Faces. Like Kevyn, I have been playing with make-up since I was 5. This book has absolutely great photos, step by step procedeures, and is very easy to follow. Did I mention it has great photos? I'm a graphic designer by trade, and this book impresses me thoroughly! In my opinion Making Faces is a must have, for anybody into make-up, girls and guys. 5 stars!
Book Review: The is a BEAUTIFUL book Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book. It is excellent! I found so many ideas for creating great make-up looks. There are step by step detailed instructions will amazing color (a few black and white) picture of people he has done that illustrate the look. The book first breaks down different types of make-up/areas (lips/lipsticks) by describing characteristics and best usage (he matte v. glossy v. creamy). Then he makes over "regular" as well as some famous faces. I reference this book frequently when trying new looks. I particular likes that he does not endorse certain brand names. It is simply a guide to creating a variety of different looks through make-up.
Book Review: This Book will Change your View of Makeup! Summary: 5 Stars
Kevyn Aucoin is a magician! I had always worn makeup but I never realized the power my own hands had until I read all of the tips in this book. As a dancer, and actress, I am on the stage a lot, and this book helped me improve how I apply my makeup, and showed me many different looks that I didn't know my face could show. Now my friends and collegues are asking me to do their makeup before our shows. There are so many tips, eyeshadow, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc. The list goes on and on. It even shows you how to look like different movie legends. If you are serious about makeup, this is the perfect book for you!
