Book Reviews of Making Vision Stick (Leadership Library)

Book Review: Not great, but a good resource...
Summary: 2 Stars

Making Vision Stick by Andy Stanley focuses on the keys to casting your vision, methods of repeating your vision, and ways of getting that vision to stick in the minds of the hearer. Andy Stanley is the founding senior pastor of North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia. His vision for North Point Community Church was, "to create a church that unchurched people would love to attend." Throughout the years, Stanley has learned five keys, which he believes, will enable any organization to successfully get their vision to stick. These five areas, which Stanley believes must be done in order to get the visions to stick, are to "state the vision simply, cast the vision convincingly, repeat the vision regularly, celebrate the vision systematically, and embrace the vision personally."

One of the areas that Stanley pointed out, which I think has been somewhat lost in the church today, is that in order to "cast the vision convincingly" you must "define the problem, offer a solution, and present a reason." Stanley does a good job of explaining the importance of understanding and applying these areas in ones vision and casting that vision. Stanley also points out that, "If you haven't defined the problem, determined a solution, and discovered a compelling reason why now is the time to act, you aren't ready to go public with your vision. It won't stick." Sadly, several of our, church bodies, mission's agencies, and para-church organizations have strayed away from these areas and their direction and vision statement is anything but simple to grasp and follow. There are also several that have no clue what problem they are trying to solve, what solution to give and cannot present a reason for their existence outside of the fact that they just felt like doing something. It is actually a problem that needs to be addressed and this book, because it addresses the issue and is written in an easy reading style, would be a good way to start.

My areas of concern with this book started when Stanley stated that his vision was "to create a church that unchurched people would love to attend," my mind began to wonder what he believes the church is and what the focus and purpose should truly be. I personally believe that many church bodies have a grave misunderstanding of what the church really is (God's children in flesh and blood) and the main reasons why we gather every Sunday (glorification and worship of God and edification of the believers). It is true that there will be lost people who will join in our corporate worship, but I do not believe this should dictate our purpose or message. However, in fairness, this book does not cover this area of my concern and therefore I cannot give fair judgment on Stanley's thinking. Second, he tends to equate the church as a business or a business model. It is true that there are business aspects found within the organization of the church body, but we must be aware of the false thinking that success or growth can only come from having a solid business model. Third, Stanley tells that in his congregation if there is someone wanting baptism then they must first do a video presentation. Stanley says, "If you won't do the video, we won't baptize you." I understand the importance of getting people to share their faith, but this is highly questionable. Finally, in an effort to show the reader how to live the vision, Stanley told the story of his sons experience on a baseball team where the head coach would not play him. After an explanation of an event in which he was upset and angered by the head coaches actions and later he was humbled and eventually one of the assistant coaches becoming a member of his congregation, Stanley said, "Over time, the head coach and I became friends. I've never had a conversation about spiritual matter with him. But the door is certainly open for that." He later says, "Making your vision stick requires bold leadership." My concern comes in trying to understand what kind of bold leadership is hesitant to talk about spiritual matter when "the door is certainly open for that." Again, I do not know the whole story, but looking back at all four of these concerns, my initial concern of understanding what he thinks church is and what our focus and purpose are about, once again comes to mind.

In the end, I would recommend this book as a good resource. Andy Stanley does a good job of writing in a way that most people will find easy and enjoyable and his outline keeps a good flow of thought and gives excellent guidance in this effort to get vision to stick. I think several of the lessons found within this book could be successfully applied and quite helpful in this area.

Summary of Making Vision Stick (Leadership Library)

A vision. You as a leader may have it, but has your organization caught it? If a leader's vision is all about what could be and what should be, why are you buried under what is? Noted author and pastor Andy Stanley points out that if followers don't get the vision, it's because the leaders haven't delivered it. He reveals the three reasons vision doesn't stick. And then he delivers three ways to make vision stick, to make you a leader worth following: 1. Cast vision strategically: defining your vision. 2. Celebrate vision systematically: regularly rejoicing in the successes 3. Live your vision continuously: putting your vision into practice in your own life With Making Vision Stick, you'll learn how to propel you and your organization forward on the vision God has granted you.
