Book Reviews of Many Bloody ReturnsBook Review: A book full of little gems Summary: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this book of short stories. I originally bought it for the Charlaine Harris story as I am a huge Sookie Stackhouse fan and was pleasantly surprised by the other stories within. It was refreshing to find stories with so many new takes on how to write a vampire story. I was introduced to several authors that I had not yet read and I went on to become addicted to several series from this book like THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRE Series by Rachel Caine and THE DRESDEN FILES by Jim Butcher.
I have several anthologies that I quit reading after a few stories because I became bored, but I read this book from cover to cover and immediately went out and bought the above mentioned series. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the Vampire Romance genre.
Book Review: I liked it Summary: 4 Stars
It's been a few years since I read this book, but I remember loving some of the short stories. I remember wishing one or two would be turned into full length novels.
For all you whiners out there, crying about how this isn't a Sookie Stackhouse novel, why didn't you read the description ahead of time? Besides, if I remember correctly, the book is much thinner than the average Sookie novel. It's your own fault for not looking into the matter first, and you shouldn't blame the book for not being a novel. Especially since it says, in big red letters "Charlaine harris, Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong and others" on the cover. That headline is even larger than the anthology's name.
Book Review: Better Than Average Summary: 4 Stars
There are many charming tales in this collection. The Sookie Stackhouse story by Charlaine Harris that begins the collection is only so-so, as is the last tale by Toni L.P. Kelner. (It does have a clever title, though. "How Stella Got Her Grave Back"--delicious!) The really memorable, unique tales include Bill Crider's "I Was a Teenage Vampire" (a Catcher In the Rye-meets-Dracula tale), "The Mournful Cry of Owls" by Christopher Golden (love that Eastern European folklore!), and "The Witch and Wicked" by Jeanne C Stein. In fact, "The Witch and Wicked" ends too abruptly. Expanded, it would make a nice stand-alone novel. The other stories are at least interesting, making for a better-than-average anthology.
Book Review: Some great, others just, well, huh.... Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this book because I love the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. I enjoyed the sense of the short stories because it gave you a view and style of writing from several different authors. I felt like Charlaine left a little out of Sookie's story in the book, "Dracula's Birthday" but it had the humor I so enjoy in her other books. Some of these stories were memorable, some not at all. I probably enjoyed the 2nd to last story most of all...because it had an Anne Rice feel to the story line and the bad guy got his in the end. I liked this book, but I don't know if I'll pick it up to re-read it again in the near future.
Book Review: Good but not great Summary: 3 Stars
I received this book as a birthday present, upon request. I enjoyed a few of the stories in the book. Most of the stories seemed rushed as if the authors were trying to force a story rather than let it flow. It's probably because the stories are based off of previous characters that they have written about and the reader should already be familiar with them. I have read all of the Sookie Stackhouse Mystery books and that is the reason I wanted this book. I honestly didn't enjoy the Sookie story as much as I thought I would. All and all the stories are ok, if you need something short to read.
