Book Reviews of Marie Antoinette: The Journey

Book Review: You Know the End, but Getting There Is So Interesting
Summary: 4 Stars

Everyone knows the story of this much maligned, doomed Queen of France, but with this book you can't help but want to find out what's going to happen next anyway. If you read it at face value, life at Versailles and then the tumult and effects of the Revolution for her is made vivid for you. A sympathetic portrait of Marie Antoinette as caring and compassionate is presented by Fraser and I enjoyed this book, but at the end I couldn't help but wonder if she really did have glaring faults at all?

Book Review: A long journey, but stick with it!
Summary: 4 Stars

Fraser's incredibly informative biography of France's most notorious queen truly is a journey, but a vastly entertaining one at that. While a reader might be confused by all of the different names and titles, Fraser keeps the narrative interesting and her tone is much like that of a novel. While this is yet another historical personage that will be dealt with in film (Kirsten Dunst doing the honors), this biography is gripping and entertaining until the end.

Book Review: Thuroughly enjoyable read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book has made me a huge fan of Fraser. She was able to deconstruct a historical, almost mythical figure, to create an achingly human person (showing flaws and strengths)... she also illustrates, without being over-dramatic, how the momentum of public scrutiny and cruelty can result in horrific injustices...she does this all all with beautiful detail and thoughtful insight. I blew through all 450 pages and was sad when it was over...

Book Review: A pleasant surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

This biography was a pleasant surprise! I thought it would be tedious to read and even harder to sift through the writer's biases. However, Antonia Frasier provided a wonderful insight into not only what Marie Antoinette's world was like, but also her strengths and weaknesses as a queen, mother, and woman. Frasier lent an air of sympathy which kept me enraptured until the very end of the book - not an easy task in a biography!

Book Review: A masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

You don't have to like biographies to like this book. It is fun of interesting facts and tid bits that are just fascinating. When I bought this book, all I had to do was read the first page and I was caught in the turbulant waters of life of Marie Antoinette. It is a book that ever history class should have to read, because it gives the read a true feeling for what the time period and sitation was really like.
