Book Review: Marilyn: The Last Straw

There are some interesting photos in this collection; but the most 'haunting' thing for me looking at them is that Marilyn hated many of these photos. But I don't believe she scratched them out because she hated herself as much as because she hated seeing herself portrayed yet again as the 'good time girl' and was unhappy about having so much of her body on show. She also spoke about how 'the eyes are dead' in photos and footage taken of her at times when she was suffering from depression, and I think this is visible in some of the pictures she rejected. Marilyn loved being photographed and was, by all accounts, very knowledgable about how to create a great photo, as well as enjoying looking at good photos of herself. Clearly during this session she was drinking and probably medicated, certainly depressed, and I feel uncomfortable looking at them, almost as if I am being voyeuristic. I don't agree that it provides a definitive portrayal of the many sides of Marilyn. Surely, part of the problem is that Bert Stern was clearly really only interested in one side of Marilyn. To see a much more human and in depth portrayal of Marilyn, look at Eve Arnold's photographs. To see Marilyn's breasts and desperation, look at these.
