Book Reviews of Martha Stewart's Baking HandbookBook Review: Trust me, yes You need this book. Summary: 5 Stars
Knowing how great Martha's recipes are I purchased this book only after seeing its cover on amazon.com. It's not about what it was about but because I knew I can depend on her for precise, great and imaginative yet edible ideas.
Upon opening this bible like manual for the precise art of baking, one notices how easy and creative the teaching approach of the book is. It's not a hard to comprehend manual with little words, yet it's not a dummy book that teaches you like a child .
I love how creative her ideas are, the cakes, cookies, tarts, popovers, pizzas, breads and pies.
The pages look like something out of a food version of a Vogue magazine. Each recipe has a gorgeous picture. I cannot stop panting and gushing about how great this book looks. It will defiantly get in you in the kitchen baking every weekend but it will excite you about this art. This book is a great fool proof guide and after baking a pumpkin pie last night from it, and having it turned out million items than my favorite recipe I am a believer. This book covers sweet and savory beaks, but mostly on sweets and breads.
This is a baking manual that is understandable yet gorgeous. Great quality and informative publishing from Stewart. Great job, I AM impressed.
Book Review: The Baking Bible indeed! Summary: 5 Stars
I know that several other reviewers have already called this book a baking bible and I have to agree 100%! My first review of this book mysteriously disappeared after about a month so I'm trying it again. (maybe because I mentioned where it could be purchased elsewhere for less...?)
This book makes it so easy whether you're an amateur or an old pro -- I'm somewhere between. The recipes and instructions make it so simple to duplicate them in taste and presentation. The presentation part is very important to me for some reason. (I guess I want all of my hard work to *look* as good as it tastes)
The general baking tips, techniques and equipment lists are very helpful. I am acquiring a decent size library of Martha's books and this one is a great addition. Even though it's a completely different shape than the others. (smaller & fatter) Maybe this is how they will be made from now on. (?)
Anyway -- it's a very helpful and visually appealing book. I like to just sit and look and read through it like it's a big beautiful magazine -- I get a lot of extra tips this way too.
All in all a great purchase that will most definitely be used for many years to come.
Book Review: My chance to be a great baker! Summary: 5 Stars
I love baked goods and I have said before that I could eat my way through a bakery. Although I am a very tallented cook, I have struggled with baking my own sweets. Deserts in my house were usually purchased and rarely homemade. I intend on changing that with this book!
Martha and her staff have put together a fantastic collection of baking recipes, and not just deserts either. There are other great things in this book including pizza dough, quick breads, and yeast breads. The instructions are easy to understand and the photographs are beautiful (I'd eat the book if I could). There is an extensive section of photographs and explainations of specific tools that are handy to have when baking. Every page is filled with valuable information.
It is my challenge to make each and every one of these recipes. I'll try a new one every weekend, if not more often, until I finish. By that time I am certain I'll be the one my friends call on for desert or fresh baked bread, and I won't have to buy my pies any longer. Thanks Martha, you are truly a "Good Thing"!
PS- I have already made the "pistachio cranberry biscotti" and they are fantastic!
Book Review: Ohhhh sooooo gooood!! Summary: 5 Stars
I will be the first to admit, I'm not a big fan of Martha Stewart. She does have great ideas for crafting and has some good recipes. But this cookbook is one of my favorites. I love to cook, and their arent alot of cook books out their that go over the essentials of baking along with the best recipes. I'm a good cook, but am new to baking (never had a sweet tooth before). This cookbook covers everything from cookies, breads, cakes, cupcakes, & specialty desserts. The ingredients are not far fetched, and are easy to come by. The instructions are written very clearly, and you don't need any special equipment to make all of it. To top it all off, she shows you ways to make your desserts look top notch with the simplest of equipment.
I give this a five star for all the reasons I have listed. I hope you enjoy it just as much.
Way to go Martha for bringing back the traditions of baking! Now if we can only get bake sales back, and allow the school systems to let us bring back the simple things of life, instead of spending way to much money for a dozen cookies/cupcakes in the bakery, that taste horrible!
Book Review: Beautiful and delicious baked goods. Summary: 5 Stars
I just made the Coconut Cake yesterday. It was definitely worth the effort of around 5 hours (my first attempt at cake) for a cake so rich tasting and infused with creamy coconut flavour. A note about this recipe: when making Coconut Curls to garnish, don't forget to bake your coconut before cracking it open - I missed this step and ended up with raw, tough and fibrous curls.
This book has high resolution close-ups of the end result of each recipe and is beautifully organized. I especially appreciate the page about required equipment at the beginning of each of the sections (cake, cookies, etc) with pictures of all the tools. Recipes are as straight-forward as possible, with no unnecessary information and are therefore fool-proof. Be aware that the recipes are written assuming that you are using a stand mixer to mix everything. I made Seven-Minute Frosting yesterday but using my hand mixer with 1 of the 2 beaters missing, it took an HOUR for the egg whites to get to frosting state. Whether you are a beginning or experienced baker, do not hesitate to get this book (if not just for the pictures! Yum)!
