Book Reviews of Martha Stewart's Baking HandbookBook Review: A comprehensive book on baking Summary: 4 Stars
Martha Stewart's "Baking Handbook" contained over 200 recipes for baking cookies, cakes, pies, tarts, cobblers and crisps, yeasted baked good as well as pastries. Stewart also provided useful information such as baking tips, baking equipments and baking techniques at the beginning of the book and this was helpful especially for the amateurs.
This would be a handy book to have especially for both the experienced bakers as well as people who would like to try baking. Some recipes are harder to make than the others but there are also simpler ones. I especially like the cake chapter. In that cake chapter, there are also information on making and baking wedding cakes which would be helpful for those who want save money on getting their wedding cakes. Highly recommended for those who have interests in baking.
Book Review: Double check ingredients Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the book based upon "Ms. Perfect's" reputation. The first recipe I tried was for Baguettes on page 312. The bread was so salty it had to be thrown out. The recipe indicates 1 1/2 tablespoons of salt. In retrospect I'm sure it should be 1 1/2 teaspoons. I wrote to Martha, thinking she would want to know. (yeah, right). The form letter I got back was about cooking at different altitudes. It was obvious my email had not even been read. What was even more interesting to me was the line (probably in all her form letters) that read,"The recipe is correct". I wrote the publisher who indicated my letter would be forwarded to the editor. I have heard nothing back. The book looks great and I would assume that the vast majority--maybe even all the other recipes--are correct.
Book Review: highly recommended Summary: 5 Stars
this is one of the best baking books i have found. i like that there is a picture for everything..so you know what the final result should look like. i have had to tweek some of my recipes here and there, but all have ended in delicious results. ingredients and equipment do make a big difference; and test kitchens usually have higher quality equipment than the average home owner, so if i have to bake for a shorter/longer time, i just make note in the book. this book offers more recipes that are not found in many cookbooks, and it is a welcome addition to my collection. i highly recommend this to anyone who loves to bake and entertain. if a recipe does not turn out to your satisfaction the first time, evaluate and make it again. the results are always Review: Joy Summary: 5 Stars
Joy joy joy joy joy. Not very informative a review, I know; but what more can be said? If you love baking, then this is just about the only compendium you'll need. Where else can you find bagels and brioche with cobblers, crackers, cream puffs, meringues, cookies, muffins, pies, galettes, tarts, baguettes - even focaccia, ciabatta, pizza dough and pissaladiere! COME ON! Who else stretches herself beyond the (already impressive) shores of the United States and sources those indescribable delicacies we can find all over this world of ours. That's our Martha. And of course, the layout and design is divine, and the book is of that delicious size - not too big and easily propped up while travelling, on the couch, treadmill, or tucked in bed for the night. Love it.
Book Review: Exceeds expectation Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book looking for ways to WOW my guests with my baking. There are plenty of ideas, pictures and instructions in this book. I am a fairly good cook and do not need instructions on producing the "basic" baked goods. I wanted to find new tools like the cannelle mold and new ways to use the mundane like using a stainless steel bowl to make a birthday cake (with piped meringue frosting browned with a brulee torch). Now you are talking my language. That is what I look for in Martha's magazines and books. I am not actually a fan, I find her kind of annoying to listen to but she has great ideas & photographs. Buy this book if you want to take the 'next step' don't bother if you are simply looking for new ways to use cake mix.
