Book Reviews of Martha Stewart's Baking HandbookBook Review: I FINALLY "GET IT" Summary: 5 Stars
There wasn't a ton of cooking in my house growing up. As far as baking goes, I have always had to fly with a blindfold on and the results have been both good and bad. Finally, this book comes along. The recipes are swell but what REALLY sells me on this book is the technical stuff. I've never had any training and I have no relatives to get this stuff from. It's nice to finally have a book in the kitchen that explains why one should only beat batter for a few minutes instead of ten. Now I "get it". Today's creative project - decorating the yellow cake with chocolate icing!
Book Review: Great book Summary: 5 Stars
What I love about this book:
*clear easy to follow directions
*color pictures for every recipe
It not only goes through the recipes, but at the beginning of every chapter it outlines the important tools you will need as well as the technique for using them. It teaches you how to bake, instead of merely putting the recipe out there and assuming you will understand the terminology.
Great book, I've already made several recipes from tasty deserts (mmm mocha roulade) to daily staples like bagles.
Book Review: come on...it's Martha... Summary: 4 Stars
Martha has got it goin' on. this book is beautiful, great pictures and recipes. i am pretty sure i put on a couple of pounds just by looking at the pictures :)
i have tried a couple of recipes and loved them. prep your ingrediants beforehand, so you don't have to worry about having enough vanilla or eggs (i speak from experience :\ )
this book is worth purchasing just to add to your collection of timeless cookbooks. it has techniques and advice that will help anyone reach a better understanding of baking.
Book Review: Lots of step-by-step pictures Summary: 5 Stars
I looked at a lot of baking books before settling on this one, and the main reason I chose it was all of the great pictures. I'm not talking about just pictures of the finished product, which can certainly be helpful, but this book actually has clear step-by-step pictures of the techniques. Especially with some of the more complicated things, like the pastries, the pictures can really take away the intimidation to try a new recipe.
So far I have not encountered any problems with ingredients that a few people have mentioned.
Book Review: A Loss for Words Summary: 5 Stars
There are not words enough to describe how good this book is. It is not just a baking cookbook. This is a baking reference--for me, the new authority on baking. If you want to master pie crusts, pies, cheesecakes, breads, cakes, cookies...even homemade croissants, scones, puff pastry, and on and on, the recipes and techniques are beautifully provided in this book and in many cases with step by step, color photos to help you along. This book is classic Martha Stewart. It is thorough and beautifully presented. Worth every single penny.
