Book Reviews of Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body!Book Review: Timely and conversational Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book and I don't regret buying it one bit. In fact, I'm in the middle of reading it a second time. This book and the way it's written does a great job at inspiring me to treat my body well and helps me understand why you are what you eat. It is about promoting a healthy, whole, nutritious lifestyle, and the science behind the hormones that make up your metabolism, which is extremely interesting and useful. Period. Ignore the buzzwords Jillian and reviewers here keep using if you want; instead, focus on using this book to EDUCATE yourself about the science behind weight loss and gain and how that same science also affects our health and longevity. Focus on using it to understand the challenges our nation is facing like obesity and disease, and how a lot of it stems from the fact that we are tricked into believing food is good for us when it actually has been stripped of its nutritional value. If you do, you will be so happy you read this. For those of you who are on the fence about buying this book -- while I can agree with some of the reviewers here that Jillian's suggestions are extreme, I think it's great and here's why:
If you know anything about Jillian, it is that she is intense and loves extremes, and that she is that way to motivate people. Some people just need a swift kick in the pants to make any sort of change, plain and simple. Why do you think she is such a successful trainer? So, of course what she recommends in her book is intense and extreme. She even states point blank that what she outlines in the book is the IDEAL situation, but even if a person who reads it takes 1 or 2 or 3 things away from it that he or she can apply in life, then that's success. As with EVERY diet, nutrition, fitness, environmental, motivational etc. book on the market, you have to take it with a grain of salt and pull out bits and pieces that you can apply in your life. Not everyone can live exactly by every step in any given book. It's like with environmental issues: I'm not going to replace all my furniture and rip out my carpet in exchange for eco-friendly materials and start telling everyone on my block how bad they are for not doing the same. But next time I buy an item or replace something, or even change a lightbulb, I'm at least going to THINK more about what I'm doing and come up with a solution that I can be proud of. Same goes for the nutrition principles outlined in this book. Make it a goal to try a few things now, and then a few more next year. If you find a bunch of her suggestions impractical and too hard for you, then focus on the few you can do. Resistance to change and fear of extremes is certainly not a good reason for someone to pass on reading the book. Her explanations of the research are smart and easy to understand, and as practical as you decide they are for you. If you find her to be preachy, you are spinning it that way yourself. Think of it as a conversation, and you will enjoy all the information she has to offer.
My case: I didn't NEED to lose a ton of weight, just about 10 pounds to feel healthier and better about myself. I found some of her suggestions helpful and others too difficult. For example, I find it time-consuming and confusing to always read labels on meat and produce and remember how they should be raised/grown and what they should be fed etc. and so I don't always buy organic. However, I decided instead that my mantra would be to eat more natural, simple foods. I could compromise by doing a better job scanning the labels of other foods I was buying, like cereal, bread, dairy, crackers etc. I now avoid any processed foods with 'evil' words like enriched, HFCS, additives, preservatives, or too many ingredients I don't recognize. I buy more whole foods, organic or not, and take Jillian's advice on eating more of the certain power foods that could help supercharge my metabolism like legumes (which I had no idea what they were and why they were so great until I read this book). I also tried to incorporate more omega-3s in my diet. Just by doing those 4 things alone and continuing my moderate workout routine around my work schedule I easily lost 6 pounds in a month and am so proud of myself. I've even found a new love for certain natural foods that seemed like they'd boring and tasteless (love you, black beans!) No one had ever broken nutritional advice down like that so simply as Jillian did for me. Yes, I had to kick up my workout routine a bit to lose the last 4 pounds, but those first 6 easy ones gave me the inspiration I needed to reach my goal. Now, I have a new goal. You have to remember that even the smallest changes can have BIG BIG results. You don't have to go to every extreme she suggests to get value from this book.
An additional benefit for me was that I learned about the functions of the different hormones and steps you can take to balance your levels, and I've been able to have some great conversations/advice sessions with my mom who is dealing with the effects of menopause right now. I've never been so well-read on estrogens before! We've really enjoyed the conversations the book has sparked for us. We both think its important to read this book simply BECAUSE it is a conversation-starter and can help a lot of skeptical people understand why the ideas in this book are important and timely. Jillian has a way of bringing the science of it to the forefront in a way that is approachable. She may not be an endocrinologist or licensed nutritionist herself, but when was the last time you read information from one of those guys that was easily digestible and conversational? This is a good way for the average person to become familiar with important discussion topics in today's scientific journals.
Just buy or borrow or take out the book from the library and decide for yourself what you can or can't do to make a big or small change in your life, and don't be discouraged by the negativity of others. Invest a little more effort, time, and maybe even money in your nutrition if you can, and you'll save BIG down the road in your health. There is something positive in this book for everyone. ALL knowledge is power. Thank you, Jillian, for breaking it down for me. You are truly an inspiration.
