Book Reviews of Mastering the Nikon D700Book Review: You'll never master the D700 with this book Summary: 2 Stars
Maybe its just me, but I expected way more in book having the title "Mastering the D700". What the authors put together in about 240 pages amount to not more than a better illustrated manual. And that's really disappointing coming from a publisher like rockynook which I thought I could trust based on other books I have from this company. If someone hands over more than $2k for a full-frame camera I would think that she or he understands the difference between full-frame (FX) and APS-C (DX) sensors and all the implications that come with it. So, why even bother to have section for that in this book. This is a camera for the semi-pro shooter so you should dive right into the guts of it all. But that's exactly where this book falls short. It is not explaining, for example, the relationship between settings in a detail that would make you a "master" of the D700. The book devotes just 90 pages on the customs and shooting settings, a little bit more that you would find in Nikon's manual. Sometimes you're left wondering or, even worse, are send to look up further details in the D700 manual. Overall very disappointing and not living up to its title. It only got a two stars rating because it is in color whereas the Nikon manual is b&w.
Book Review: TRANSCENDENTAL BOOK Summary: 5 Stars
To handle it properly and squeeze every drop of its potential, you must know exactly what each function and/or control of the D700 does. Otherwise, there is no practical reason for spending so much money in a camera this caliber: The D700 is the most precise, versatile, efficient and owner configurable semi-pro camera in today's market and you have the option of customize it to the most demanding calibration parameters, personal needs and settings, as no other camera of its kind can. That's why this book is so transcendental: it explains clear and thoroughly why and how each and every setting and tuning can be placed in the camera. Where the owner's manual gets short (even with its 400+ pages), and for that matter, other books of its kind, this volume fills the blanks. Indeed, this book could be considered a general digital camera operating manual. Now you'll know exactly what kind of extraordinary camera you have in your hands and how to explode all of its possibilities.
Book Review: A great manual for a great camera Summary: 5 Stars
Just three weeks ago I switched from my Nikon F90 to the Nikon D700. Yes, I'm a newbie on digital photography. Therefore I needed a good manual. And this is a great manual!
It's written in clear language, it's illustrated with to the point images and it meets all requirements of a serious amateur photographer. The author gives a thorough description of the options of the D700 with useful reference to the original Nikon manual and helps starters in digital photography, like me. The book was published only a few months after the D700 was available. It's amazing to see that the author has managed to master his D700 and write a great manual about it in the same time.
This book not only helped me mastering the camera, but also got me even more enthusiastic than I already was to get started!
Book Review: Mastering the Nikon D700 for Non-master photographers. Summary: 5 Stars
Whether you are upgrading your primary Nikon DSLR camera, or just purchasing your first digital Nikon SLR, the 200 plus pages of the manual can be a bit intimidating. Thankfully "Mastering the Nikon D700" is there to help. Here the information is easy to understand, and fun to practice using. The information continually refered to specific pages within the camera's manual and the operations menue, so you can check it yourself if you like. I found the writing simple to understand and practical to us whether you are a professional photographer, or a student. As a member of the Nikonians it is a pleasure to add this book to my collection of "how to" books in my office, as well as in my camera case as you will too. I am sure I will be refering to it a lot as I go from one shoot to another with my Nikon D700.
Book Review: Mastering the D700 Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this book on the recommendation of several people on the Nikonians website. It is an excellent book and it has helped me gain valuable inside knowledge of my D700. While the supplied manual is in depth, Mastering The D700 is concise and to the point. I particularly appreciated the authors personal recommendations for D700 settings and the reasons why he used that setting. The color images of the camera menu as the author walked you through the various features of the camera were invaluable. I could easily compare the settings on those pages with the menu item on my D700.I will keep this book as a reference in my camera bag. I highly recommend this book to anybody that is thinking of buying a D700.
