Book Reviews of Mastering the Nikon D700Book Review: All cameras are created equal? Summary: 4 Stars
It used to be that way, it was like riding a bycicle, more or less. Make or model didn't matter as you learned to ride one and you could handle all others. Today modern cameras can pose a challenge especially if you are like me that hate going through a 450 page manual, part by part or function by function description, then this book is for you as it is well written and illustrated and refernced to Nikon's camera manual pages. It helps putting together an extensive mind map of the functions and capabilities of the camera in relation with purpose, preferences and style and it's use in the real world. Paper, print and bindig are excellent.
Book Review: Non essential but it might be of help to many. Summary: 3 Stars
I consider this book a kind of a advanced manual for the nikon D700. Is it necesary? No. Would you get more knowledge about your camera after reading it? Probably, if you havent read forums and reviews about the D700 on the web.
What you will understand a lot better: the functions and variables available in the camera menues, things that in the manual are just barely described, if they are described at all. If you just moved from canon to nikon, you probably need it to understand the camera functions faster. If you just left your nikon D200 or D2x and bought this camera, you will do fine without the book.
Book Review: Book Review-Mastering the Nikon D700 by Darrell Young Summary: 4 Stars
I will be purchasing the Nikon D700 as a second body to my existing Fuji S5. Each camera has specific advantages for certain applications. The reviews on the D700 have been excellent, but I wanted to explore the camera features in depth before moving forward with the purchase. This book provided exactly what I wanted for purposes of better understanding the capabilities of this camera in addition to being able to reduce my learning curve on navigating the menus and improving my proficiency on using the camera when it arrives. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering or already owns this camera.
Book Review: Super Boiler-Plating Summary: 5 Stars
I have read the D300 book by the same authors. I would guess that 95% of the D300 book has been "Boiler-Plated" Word-for-Word in their "New" D700 book. Same images as the D300 except for the new menus and button placements.
Did they take those D700 images with a D300, or a D200, or a D100? We'll never know.
They do address the newest parts of the D700 very nicely, but I feel that their economy of effort in publishing this book, and not providing some new and exciting images makes for a rather dull read, especially in you already read the same words verbatim, in their D300 book.
Book Review: Great job, simplified complex camera use Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best book describing how to get the maximum use from your newly acquired camera that I have ever read. I have had a at least 25 camera's starting with an Argus acquired in Japan about 1946. I have had Exacta's, an Argus, several Canon's,and for my wife/daughter-in-law and me over a dozen different Nikon's. The D700 is a relatively complex device, this book makes it simple, and as complex as this camera is, made the instructions concise as they could be and still readable. Can't ask for more. Now if I can just master at least some of what is in this wonderful book. Robert L Brewer
