Book Reviews of Max (Maximum Ride, Book 5)Book Review: The Final Warning 2: Max and Fangs love oddessey Summary: 1 Stars
Warning: Spoilers may be contained
Max takes place when Maxs mom gets kidnapped by an "evil" man named Mr Chu and so the flock has to go save her while at the same time figure out why fish are dying off the coast of Hawaii.
This book, was absolutely terrible in every conceiveable way, mostly because of, well, everything for the following reasons:
1. The Characters
Throughout the series the flock has progressively gotten more immature and in this book is when they are the worst because everyone is just an annoying brat. Angel still makes everyone do what she wants via Jedi Mind Trick and spends about half of the book trying to make Max "find out if she has gills". At the beginning, Nudge is completely annoying because she wants to be like a normal kid, go to school, etc. and as everyone has explained to her (even though she refuses to listen), anytime they stay at one place for too long something bad happens and she never can be normal due to wings. Also iggy and gazzy are pretty much non-existant in this book and get maybe 2 lines every 15 chapters or so. Max just will not shut the hell up about talking about Fang. Every few chapters she will give us a list on everything thats on her mind and the last 2-3 is always something that mentions Fang. The "enemy" Mr Chu doesnt do anything at all. We see him maybe 3 times and thats it because hes buzy sitting around in him chair in his underwater lair telling his cyborgs to go kill everything and hes not menacing or interesting at all.
2. The Romance
God was this just annoying. Max and Fang finally admit they have feelings for each other and practically make out so much that it amazes me that we dont have Max and Fang jrs running around. So theyre in love, great, congrats on their part, but it was seriously overkill in this book becuase im here to read MR, not a rewriting of Twilight with different characters.
3. Constant errors that defy the impossible and what the book has told us.
For most of the book, the flock is sitting in a submarine basically doing nothing and sometimes they are forced to go outside. Now normally, the water pressure would be so great, that any kind of veterbrate animal would implode, should they ever enter that type of area. The book even shows us this when Mr Chu kills one of his men for no reason at all by jettisoning him out the torpedo hatch. Now when the flock goes out there (namely Angel and later Max), they are completely un-effected by this. Every single person on the sub is saying how impossible that is, so how does the book reply? "Were bird kids" Just like that, plain and simple. Because they have freaking wings, they can instantly defy the impossible, especially when they were never designed to do this. Later on when they are being attacked by the M-Geeks are theyre called, they start to drill into the side of the submarine, so how do we take care of them? What the demo expert does is take out the explosive power inside a torpedo, launch it outside, and waited for one of the sparks to ignite it and instead of exploding, it somehow manages to create a perfect electircal field around the sub and destroys the cyborgs. And yes, it sounds as stupid as it was. When they finally do get to the underwater base and try to break in (after going through an invisible electric force field (because we apprantly have that kind of technology), some mutant fish they befriended sneeze out this acidic residue that burns a whole into the base so that they can rescue Maxs mom. Now when they try to leave, the monsters create a snot bubble for them to climb into. So when they do, i cna only ask, why werent they burned by the snot when 2 seconds ago it melted glass? The book never answers that. Also near the beginning when they are holed up in a cabin, and are surrounded by M-Geeks, Gazzy somehow managed to build a lightning rod out of nothing, aim it at the M-geeks, and somehow managed to fire a constant focused stream of lightening at them. 1. I knew gazzy was good with explosives but now hes McGuyver? Later on he manages to build an oxygen tank out of charcoal and a vacuum cleaner, which again, is impossible. 2. When a lightening rod gets struck, it doesnt shoot beams anywhere, it just absorbs most of it and maybe disperses whats left, but it cannot shoot out a freaking beam of concentrated lightening. Also on a side note, when they had to do BS training, Fang contridicts his own power he received in the last book. In the final warning, he gained the ability to cloak if he stood still for a period of time. When hes doing training, one of the objectives is to go through a jungle and avoud being seen by guards, so what does he do? Instantly turns invisible and casual walks through. If your going to have someone write your book JP, you'd better keep them up to date on what people can and cant do.
4. The main focus this time is pollution
This is why i call the book "The Final Warning 2" becuase instead of global warming, the book basically tells us that humanity destroys oceans by pollution and if we dont stop, we could kill hundreds of fish and make some mutate into prehistoric creatures. Im serious, thats what the book says, although not as much as TFW did. Whats even worse is that a group has been formed between books 4 and 5 which is basically there to promote how humanity is apprantly the devil and everyone supports it.
5. The Story
Quite frankly, there is none. For about a 3rd of the book the flock is doing absolutely nothing and nothing really happens untill they finally get on the sub at around the 200 page mark out of 300 or so. They spend the rest of the book sitting in a sub, still doing nothing and eventually save Maxs mom and then the book ends. If your looking for some of the action from the previous books, then you will be dissapointed because there is none since Angel litterally tells anything thats about to attack them to go away and they do. I never realises that a mind reading 8 year old could be so convincing to cyborgs, sharks, and anything else you can think of.
In summary, this book was terrible for everything listed above. Now that the series is in the "protectors" saga, were guaranteeded another book that tells us complete BS about how humanity causes all of the worlds problems. This is absolutely tasteless on Pattersons part for maing this entire series into a giant PSA on his political views. If i wanted to learn about this, I would read the appropriate books so stop ruining my entertainment already JP. My reccomendation, avoid this book at all costs.
Summary of Max (Maximum Ride, Book 5)Maximum Ride and the other members of the flock have barely recovered from their last Arctic adventure, when they are confronted by the most frightening catastrophe yet. Millions of fish are dying off the coast of Hawaii and someone--or something--is destroying hundreds of ships. Unable to discover the cause, the government enlists the flock to help them get to the bottom of the disaster before it is too late.
While Max and her team are exploring the depths of the ocean, their every move is being carefully tracked by Mr. Chu--a criminal mastermind with his own plans for the flock. Can they protect themselves from Mr. Chu's army of mercenaries and save the ocean from utter destruction?
