Book Review: The Maximum Ride

James Patterson's witty heroine Maximum Ride and her flock of part-bird mutants returns in School's Out -Forever, the second volume of the Maximum Ride Series. This book is a direct continuation of the previous one, following the adventures of six genetically mutated part-bird children named Iggy, Fang, Gasman, Angel, Nudge and Max.
After their last adventure, Max and company have decided to embark on a quest to find their birth parents and discover their origins. It isn't long before Fang becomes injured and the flock is forced to enter a human hospital. It is here that they meet the mysterious FBI agent Anne, who seems to know more about the flock than they do.
Max reluctantly takes Anne's charity and the mutants take up residence in her house where she enrolls them in a completely normal, and completely human, school. This was the most enjoyable part of the novel because it allowed the kids to be, well, kids. They aren't exactly discipline cases, but the antics definitely ensue at the flock's school -from stink bombs to first dates, Max is finally given a chance at a semi-normal life.
Of course, it doesn't last. Soon, the flock is on the run again. They pick up a few more clues on the way about what they are supposed to save the world from, but most of the information is left too cryptic and scattered to really do much good.
While this book is a decent follow-up to the original, I didn't feel like it was nearly as exciting or as enjoyable. The same trademark Patterson style is present -short, simple sentence and short chapters. However, unlike the previous book in the series, it felt anticlimactic and as if Patterson didn't know what to do past a center point. There were a handful of interesting revelations, but most of them didn't feel very groundbreaking and left the reader wanting more.
Will I read the next book? Yes. Why? Because I think Max is such a fun character, and because sometimes you just need something fun and shallow to get your mind off things. School's Out -Forever isn't the best book in the series, but if you just going along for the ride, it can be fun.
