Book Reviews of Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy PregnancyBook Review: The only pregnancy book I consult Summary: 5 Stars
After consulting with girlfriends and getting the books they recommended, I still didn't feel like I had enough information. I purchased the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, and haven't consulted another book since. I appreciate the clinical approach to pregnancy, especially when describing fetal development, body changes and procedures such as prenatal testing. It is an excellent reference book for pregnancy and the early months of life with baby. I only wish they would revise it to keep up with changes such as new protocols for prenatal screening. For example, it mentions nuchal translucency measurement as somewhat experimental, though when combined with maternal blood tests for free Beta hcg and PAPP-A, along with nasal bone measurement (none of which are mentioned), it is an excellent screening tool. I highly recommend this to prospective parents who want the medical low-down, presented with tenderness when appropriate but without the irrelevant fluff.
Book Review: Detailed information, straightforward, organized Summary: 5 Stars
Like many other reviewers, I received "What to Expect..." as a gift after we announced our pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic book, however, was the one I chose to buy myself. All the information is there in a straightforward, scientific manner (not cutesy writing with cartoons). I skimmed through most of it and have been reading each section as it relates to my pregnancy, and have really been satisfied with this book.
Everything is organized by timeline and topic, and I've found it to be a great, true "resource" in preparing for the next stages in pregnancy and childbirth. Other pregnancy books, such as "What to Expect" and even "YOU Having a Baby" were both okay, but to me are more like interesting reads if you're interested in learning more ABOUT pregnancy, not as guides to read while you're going through it.
Definitely recommend the Mayo Clinic guide for any women (and men) looking for textbook-like information without the dumbed-down cuteness.
Book Review: Mayo Clinic Healthy Pregnancy Guide Is A Great Resource Summary: 4 Stars
I recieved a copy of the Mayo Clinic's Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy half-way through my second pregnancy. I wish I'd had it the first time around! The book is divided into 4 helpful sections: Pregnancy, Childbirth and Your Newborn; Decision Guides for Pregnancy, Childbirth and Parenthood; Pregnancy Reference Guide; and Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth. I liked how the first section described the baby's growth by month thereby clumping weeks together, which seemed to make more sense than a week by week development. At the end of each chapter/month there is a guide listing troublesome signs and symptoms and when to call your doctor. The Decision Guide section is unique to any of the pregnancy books I have, and I appreciated the thorough treatment of the subjects. Any question I had seemed well covered in the Pregnancy Reference Guide. I also appreciated the glossary at the end of the book. I'd definitely recommend adding this to your pregancy/childbirth library.
Book Review: To the point Summary: 5 Stars
The "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" is a very clear cut and honest look at pregnancy. It does not pander to any fads or trends but reports actual issues that can occur and gives an honest look into what to expect. It won't tell you where or how to find the best pregnancy pants or give any frivolous thoughts on any of the subjects. Yet when you need to know what to expect health wise about your pregnancy, what changes at what times will normally occur, and statistical facts about what can go on, then this is the book for you. After reading all the garbage on the internet about fears based on very little study I was frightened about what my real chances of issues were. This book is frank and informs people based on decades of experience and study on the issue of pregnancy. I've stopped reading all the new articles about pregnancy as most of the information seems more than a little hysterical compared to the down to earth discussions that this book has.
Book Review: Love this one Summary: 5 Stars
We are on our second baby, and I've got this one permanently on the nightstand again. I preferred this book over the other pregnancy books, even "What to Expect". It seems more geared to explaining the details of what is going on....the toes grow now, the hearing is developed now, etc. I also like the way it is organized. Month by month, with weekly breakdowns for baby's development and mother's experiences. They also have a great section of the book that explains why your symptoms mean. Great to go to when your nose is stuffy during the first trimester, and it explains why it is happening.
A piece of advice...with our first baby, I only gave cursory attention to the 'baby care' sections of any of my books. After we got home with her, I was poring over subjects like breastfeeding, swadding, what to do about the crying, etc. Don't let yourself get caught unprepared. Use the quiet time now to read up on that, too!
