Book Reviews of Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog

Book Review: Merles Door
Summary: 2 Stars

First let me say that many more enjoyed this book than are critical.
I found it to have a large amount of " fill" does it really need 200 annotations? do we really have to hear about Ted's sexual encounters and world travels? I began to feel that he was more interested in telling about himself than Merle. I kept thinking that we are looking at a 50 year old far left liberal into new age religion etc. IE An old Hippy.

There are many parts related to Merle's adventures that are interesting, but I do not really consider this book memorable. I purchase extra copies of memorable books to share with my friends. In do not plan to purchase any additional copies of this one, and likely will not even pass it on for others to read.

This did not compare to "The art of Racing in the Rain." Bernie Doran

Book Review: Lessons, indeed
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is about the lives of a man, Ted and a canine, Merle. A story of their relationship and their lives as individuals as well. This book is about the both of them - and how they age together and get through life's trials and tribulations, loves and losses.

Dogs do think and communicate - something that I've experienced myself (not an imagined ideal). I liked the author's approach of treating Merle as a true companion rather than a "pet".

The book made me think of my own dogs' lack of stimulation - is two walks per day along the exact same route stimulating? Of course not.

To find a safe and secure place for one's dog to run off leash and thrive in that freedom was an important reminder this book gave to me about truly giving them a happy life.

Book Review: Some Dogs Are More Evolved Than Humans
Summary: 5 Stars

When the author meets 10-month-old abandoned Merle in the desert, the dog intuitively knows this man will be his life partner, which is what unfolds. This is an intelligent book for dog lovers or people who want to better understand the nature of dogs. Certainly anyone who has experienced a true bond with a dog will relate to Merle's Door. It's a story about allowing and trusting a dog's innate intelligence which then results in our own evolution as humans; for we still do have so much to learn. For readers who like science and research there is plenty of this as well. But mostly it's a beautiful story about one of the luckiest dogs in the world (a really smart one too), who hooked himself up with an observant, rather enlightened human.

Book Review: Best , Most descriptive book I have ever read.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is most definitely a 5 Star book & also a 5 Kleenex read. The writer is a real human being & definitely a real dog too. His descriptions made it seem like I was right there every step of the way . What a beautiful story and a beautiful tribute to Man and his Dog. Even , what normally would be very dry commentary on the history of dogs, was most interesting to read. He made the technical information very easy to understand and has the talent to make it part of the story. I learned so much about dogs and even more about humans . What a wonderful read. Don't miss it even if you aren't a dog lover. It touched my heart and my emotions like no other non-fiction book every has .

Book Review: Resounding love. Spiritual connection
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best books ever written. It is about living life fully, allowing love to fill your soul, the spirit and mind connection of human and canine in general, and the deep spiritual connection between this particular dog and this particular man. Ted Kerasote is an accomplished outdoorsman, a careful observer, a writer with rare talent. His respect, admiration and love for Merle are so alive on the page that the reader is drawn directly in. Merle will become your dog as well. You will hold him in your arms, look into his eyes, run your fingers through his ruff - and suffer wails of grief when his body lives no longer. But, Merle is immortalized here. And that is a joyful thing.
