Book Reviews of Message in a BottleBook Review: It is not impossible to capture true love on paper. Summary: 4 Stars
Message In A Bottle I always thought that it was virtually impossible to capture true love on paper, but in the novel Message In A Bottle, by Nicholas Sparks proved me wrong. Theresa Osborne lives in a great apartment in Boston, has a wonderful job at the Boston Times, and a close relationship with her teenage son, Kevin. Although her life seems picture perfect, she has felt an emptiness in her life ever since she divorced from her husband. She is longing for love, yet afraid to go after it. This novel is the perfect example of taking risks, following your heart, and enjoying the reward that follows. While taking a relaxing vacation from her busy, confusing life at her friend Deanna's beach house in Cape Cod, Theresa tells Deanna that her ideal man would have to be, "handsome, kind, intelligent, and charming.... he would have to spend time with Kevin as if he were his own son..... and he'd have to be romantic too." Little does she know that while running on the beach one morning she would stumble over a bottle with a message that would give her just that. It was a letter wrapped up in the bottle; a love letter that would change her life. She was so touched by the letter that she decided to print it in her column in the paper. This lead to the discovery of another letter that had been washed up on the beach in Norfolk, Virginia and found by a women who had kept and treasured it for three long years. Theresa then continued to search. Printed on the internet, she found yet another letter with a similar backround. When she finally got hold of it, she compared the letters and to her amazement all three were love letters written to Catherine, from Garrett. It seemed that Catherine had somehow disappeared or gone away. We later learn that Catherine had been hit by a car and killed three years before. Garrett missed her terribly and expressed his undying love for her in the touching words of the letters. Theresa thought about this man Garrett day and night. She had never met him or seen him; she didn't know what he looked like or how old he was. But one thing was for sure; he was out there, somewhere. Deanna convinced her to follow her heart and to find him. Theresa even said that one of the many things she had learned was that if you discover something that makes you tighten inside, you had better learn more about it. And so she did. With Deanna's help they discover that Garrett lived around Wilmington, North Carolina, owned a diving store called Diving Island, and a boat named Happenstance. With that information and hotel reservations, Theresa Osborne was off in search of the man of her dreams. And she found him. Garrett Blake was his name and after a ride on the Happenstance and a wonderful evening together, Theresa realized that this mystery man was everything she had been longing for and a hundred times more. The rest was history. I was truly touched by this novel. It was a beautifully written, romantic love story and I honestly couldn't put the book down. Nicholas Sparks captured excitement, beauty, and love in one amazing story. By:Kerri Zimmer ' ' ~ ü dà d x 2 ~ -/ à=! " # $ %
Summary of Message in a BottleDivorced and disillusioned about relationships, Theresa Osborne is jogging when she finds a bottle on the beach. Inside is a letter of love and longing to "Catherine," signed simply "Garrett." Challenged by the mystery and pulled by emotions she doesn't fully understand, Theresa begins a search for this man that will change her life. What happens to her is unexpected, perhaps miraculous-an encounter that embraces all our hopes for finding someone special, for having a love that is timeless and everlasting.... Nicholas Sparks exquisitely chronicles the human heart. In his first bestselling novel, The Notebook, he created a testament to romantic love that touched readers around the world. Now in this New York Times bestseller, he renews our faith in destiny, in the ability of lovers to find each other no matter where, no matter when... If you thought The Notebook was a tearjerker, get out the hankies, pull up a chair, and get ready to have your heart monkey-wrenched by Nicholas Sparks's second star-crossed love story, Message in a Bottle. When Theresa Osborne takes a much-needed summer holiday at Cape Cod, she finds a lot more than a break from the hustle and bustle. On an early-morning jog along Cape Cod Bay, she comes across a corked bottle with a scrolled-up message inside that reads, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you, my darling, as I always do, but today is especially hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together..." It bobbles around in the same vein for several more paragraphs and ends with "...am alone on the pier and I do not care what others think as I bow my head and cry and cry and cry. Garret." Garret may eat quiche, but no bother--before you can say "Look! I found two more letters!" Theresa is hot on his trail and determined to find this mysterious yet sensitive message-in-a-bottle man. She finds him at a sleepy North Carolina port, working on his beloved sailboat, The Happenstance. From there, a romance buds and blossoms into a colorful bouquet of emotional baggage. Theresa has problems with her past--or, more accurately, her past is a problem. She is so scarred from her "I'm a super churchgoing guy now that I've run out on my wife" ex-husband that she hasn't tried to date since her divorce some three or four years before. And who is Catherine? And what's Garret's bag, anyway? When Theresa finds out, she plunges to the depths of her soul and uncorks a whopper of a secret about herself, bringing Garret to terms with who he really is. Message in a Bottle has the earmarks of sentimental tongue-wagging at its finest and should please romantics and cynics alike--it's sure to bring romantics to their knees, while cynics will be slapping theirs in laughter. --Rebekah Warren
