Book Review: Not bad and interesting projects

I just completed one of the projects featured in the book (a picture of my finished project is on the images under this book)titled, "Domestic Goddess, Framed Portrait." It's basically a pic (the author used a black and white one of her mother with a metallic crown on her head) placed on metal and placed inside a wood frame that has metal bottle caps around it with little retro images of food inside the caps. The author omitted how she got the crown effect so I just attempted to figure out what I could. It's a nice kitchy project and I made it for my mother. However for me at least the project ended up costing me about $60 to make. I couldn't find any frames at Hobby Lobby, Lowes or Home Depot that fit the bill so I had to order one online which cost me about $20. Then I had to buy Omni Gel, Diamond Glaze, $10 paint (of which I was only going to use a couple of coats), a piece of metal and some bottle caps. For some people buying Diamond Glaze and Omni Gel isn't so bad since they'll be using it on a number of projects but other costs started to add up. I also didn't understand why we had to scrape off the backing of the photo since it could have easily simply been omni-gelled onto the piece of metal? The descriptions explaining the "Basic Method" of image transfer weren't that detailed. I also had a tough time getting the back paper off even after leaving it in very warm water for awhile. Because I couldn't find any retro images of food items I simply pulled up some pics online and used those. I have some metal, omni gel and diamond glazes left over to make the "Family Tree, Metal Collage" but I'd take the cost into consideration and suggest adding other helpful extras to your project like blogs and youtube videos of crafters explaining the methods.
