Book Reviews of Midnight Rising (The Midnight Breed, Book 4)

Book Review: Wonderful series!
Summary: 5 Stars

Story line:

Fueled by pain and rage over a shattering betrayal, the warrior Rio has pledged his life to the war against the Rogues. He will let nothing stand in his way--least of all a mortal woman with the power to expose the entire vampire race. But now an ancient evil has been awakened, and a stunning darkness is on the rise.
For journalist Dylan Alexander, it began with the discovery of a hidden tomb. Suddenly she is at the center of a gathering storm of violence and secrets. But nothing is as dangerous as the scarred, lethally seductive man who rises from the shadows to plunge her into his world of dark desire and endless night. Here she is powerless to resist Rio's touch, even as she uncovers a shocking link to her own past. Now Dylan must choose: Leave Rio's midnight realm, or risk it all for the man who has shown her true passion and the infinite pleasures of the heart .

My point of view:

Rio is highly likable, even with a scared face he is hot as hell. Dylan (breedmate) is hands down my favorite breedmate. She is smart, sassy, and realistic. The love story is not near as intense as it is with the other characters from the first 3 books, but then again I think Lara Adrian was realistic with these two characters. It is nice to get lost in the dream world when it comes to these books but the story line between Rio and Dylan is more down to earth -- Dylan's dyeing mother, Rio's broken heart and scared face.

What is great about this book is the sub-plot. Its involved, suspenseful, and keeps you reading. I thought Lara Adrian had some great twist and I'm so looking forward to number 5!

Book Review: One long sob story
Summary: 2 Stars

I've read all the books in this series, and decided that this is the last one for me. My favorite and the only one I actually liked was the Midnight Awakening (book 3 in the series). Somehow that story really appealed to me and all the supporting characters and action involved made it an entertaining read. Midnight Rising didn't quite do it for me. Don't get me wrong, the storyline is not that bad and I do think that Lara Adrian is a talented writer. My problem is inability to connect with the characters and identical theme throughout every book.

Why does everyone have to be so tortured and unhappy? Dylan is dealing with her mother's cancer, and Rio certainly has a number of issues - and together they are one big soap opera with a ghostly ex-wife in tow. Enough with all the tortured souls! Don't happy people without a truck load of issues ever get together?

Also, every single book has the same formula, which is getting very old - they meet; like each other; know they can't be together but really want to; overcome that barrier and say their I love you's; and finally mate for life. The hero and heroine are different, the setting is a bit different, but other then that everything stays the same. And I know that the next book will be exactly the same.

If you can't get enough of the heart wrenching love story with a supernatural twist and a very happy ending - this series is for you. Otherwise, read Midnight Awakening, which is the best book in the series, and that will pretty much sum up the whole long story for you.

Book Review: Midnight Rising
Summary: 4 Stars

I finished this book in one evening. It probably had nothing to do with the fact that I already mostly knew (and was sort of attached to) the characters or that the main 'hero' of this novel had so much to overcome.

Rio, one of the Breed warriors, was betrayed by his Breedmate Eva, in the very first book. Her betrayal nearly killed him; scarring his body and soul so badly that by the time the fourth book rolls around Rio is ready to end it all.

Before he can set off the explosives that would be necessary to destroy evidence of a cave crypt of an Ancient One (and seal himself inside) a woman enters the cave where he had been hiding and sees the glyphs on the wall, the human remains and the empty crypt. Unable to let her just walk away while knowing more than she should (especially since the woman is a journalist!) Rio follows her and eventually has to kidnap her. But containing the information and the woman he kidnapped (Dylan) is much more difficult than Rio had imagined.

Dylan's unique gift as a Breedmate allows her to see Breedmates who have died, who have something they want to tell her or want her to do. This isn't something that Dylan understands at first, never having learned about her potential as a Breedmate. The ghost of Eva actually led Dylan to Rio and helps Rio locate Dylan after she is kidnapped by Dragos (the villain!).

It was very easy to read and certainly furthers the main storyline plot. Can't wait to snatch up the next one this December.

Book Review: yes, a bit rushed...
Summary: 4 Stars

Midnight Rising is a good read, although the romance between Rio and Dylan was a bit rushed. I do wish it would have been slowed down, Rio turning from the anguished man who wanted to die to adoring lover was a quick flip. The author covered a lot in one book and it did feel too short; Rio and Dylan's romance, Rio's return home and his interaction with the other warriors, Dylan's mother, Rio's closure concerning his wife's betrayal, the Ancient, the stop in Germany, and on and on. I think almost every character that we have been introduced to was in this book. Dylan and her mother were very touching, but the way that situation was resolved was somewhat shocking. It made sense concerning the mystery aspect of the plot, but I admit it left me feeling bummed out. Compounding that with the speed romance, I didn't have the happy, satisfied feeling that comes with the end of a book - especially a romance. Part of the problem with books such as this - mysterious secret groups fighting evil - is that the the female lead (generally the mysterious secret group is all male) needs to either be a loner, which they usually are, or cut all ties to her past life. It makes complete sense, but can get old. Unless the protaganists are extremely diverse and spectacularly written, it is just the same plot over and over with only little to distinguish itself from other books. Adrian has done a good job with this series so far, but I hope future books focus more on the romance between the two leads rather than the other characters and subplots.

Book Review: Follow Up Does NOT Disappoint True Paranormal Romance Fans
Summary: 4 Stars

When I am in the mood for a paranormal romance, especially one featuring vampires, I prefer ones with an alpha male figure as the protagonist. And while Lara Adrian's vampires are not as "alpha" as say J. R. Ward's vampires -- they have a softer side which is also endearing and fits the plots of her stories.

If you have been following the series, this book is about Rio who is the vampire who got "jacked up" in the explosion in a previous novel.

The story is basically about him finding a reason to live and move on with his life, forgive the sins of the past, and find love again. I think it's the find love again part that was a hard sell for me at first.

I like my vamps to be one-woman guys. Either their soulmate or die! So when Rio found a new love interest in this book (which of course I knew it would be) I wanted to see how the author would play it out.

She did a good job. And I actually found this book to be a great read - and more importantly it delivered just what I expected from the author (unlike Ward's Phury novel). A great paranormal romance with a great continuing (soap opera style) subplot.

If you are new to the series, start from the beginning. But if you have been reading the series and you were just double-checking to see if you should even bother with this title - please do!
