This book is life altering for the person suffering from TMS... Which covers about 95% of the cronic back pain sufferers.

This book talks about many different remedies that I'd already tried or planed on trying. Ugh. And then says what the treatment does and doesn't do....

The theme of the book is similar to others in that it points out how much of a placibo affect much treatment is.... and that much like a car radio left on all night; our minds must be shut off periodically and regularly in order for the rest of the system to recharge. If not done, much like that same car-radio, the battery will wear out.

Dr. Sarno suggests that much of our pain is from this constant flow of energy through the nerve channels causing inflamation, which then cuts off the normal circulation of blood. Thus, when your feet or hands go numb, cold, or tingling... really just imflamation.

Carpal tunnel is just like that (studied this also, massage/chinese medicine student), you use the hands,arms, wrists in a manner that is physically repeatetive and forcing it in awkward positions.... eventally, the housing that creates space around the nerve strands becomes so inflamed that it pinches the nerves and cuts off blood supply.

This book has really opened my eyes to how I can help myself by just being aware that it's coming from my thinking. I found that just that awareness, stopped the pain. When I wake up in the morning, as I'm spending that first couple of minutes sitting on the john (sorry, but the truth).... this is the first moment in the day to work the magic. I take a deep breath and notice that I'm holding tension in my shoulderblade area (which hurts right then). Just the breath and noticing the muscle action, gets the muscle to release and your posture to correct itself.... the pain stops. It's just that easy.

I had just flown to San Francisco to get two more vertebras fused together... already had three fused together after a terrible accident as a 16 year old. I am 35 and was facing some really tough rehabilitation...

The surgeon in San Fran. was the original surgeon who operated on me when I was 16. He had referred me to someone near me; this guy kept ordering more c-scans and mri's. He'd scheduled a discography (sp??, but it's where they inject dye into your spine to show where it's not circulating properly). I'd heard this was very painful, so called the original surgeon for consultation. He had me fly up.... looked at everything and said there was nothing to be done. Back looked really good and that I should continue my pursuit of chinese medicine... etc. Perhaps look into pain management....

I trusted that doctor and skipped the surgery. Then after reading this book, I am living proof. Also, Dr. Sarno has written it in a short, easy-to-read manner, fit for any reader.
