Book Review: Sexism seriously detracts from good story line in this book

While Miracles on Maple Hill has a very interesting story line, with family tensions portrayed in a sensitive, but honest way, the sexism made it difficult for me to stay with the story. The protagonist, Marly, can't explore the city like her slightly older brother Joe because her parents won't let her. She buys into that decision because "If Joe got off the bus at the wrong stop, he would just act like that's what he intended to do," while her reaction would be to ask a policeman for help and be delivered home for a lecture from her parents. She has to wait for Joe to invite her to go with him to explore around their new home in the country: she offers to make lunch for them, and Joe is so pleased to see that she is up before him with two bag lunches prepared - one for her and another, twice as big, for Joe. When Joe and her father are off fishing with the delightful older character Mr. Chris, Marly and her mother do "woman things" at the house together. I would not have wanted my daughter to spend much time reading books such as this when there are so many excellent books without the sexist stereotypes now.
Summary of Miracles on Maple Hill
Marly's father came back from the war a different man. Something inside him seems as cold and dead as the winter world outside. But when the family moves to Grandma's old house on Maple Hill, miracles begin to happen. The sap in the trees begins to rise, the leaves begin to turn, and Marly's father starts to bloom again, like the world around them.
This wise and moving story is a must-have for every reader's library.
