Book Reviews of Miss RumphiusBook Review: One Lupine at a Time Summary: 5 Stars
A little girl living in a busy port city dreams of traveling to faraway places. Which she does - to a tropical island, to jungles, to snowy mountains - and remains single, and happy ("almost perfectly"), before finally retiring to a seaside village where she takes to scattering the seeds of blue and purple lupines, and setting an example for the neighboring children "to make the world more beautiful." The Lupine Lady they call her, with no idea of the places she's been, but they are attentive. This may sound overly reverential on the surface, and even old-fashioned, but Cooney tells this story - as always panoramically illustrated - without a hint of the sort of breathlessness that might have hinted at some Larger Meaning. Sprightly and self-sufficient, like the life that informs it.
Book Review: Wise and Delightful Tale is a Favorite Gift Summary: 5 Stars
A joy for my daughters and me to read when they were little - and not so little! - Miss Rumphius is now my favorite gift book for kids between 5 and 9 years old. The illustrations alone are rich and delightful. They accompany a profound yet accessible story about what makes a life worthwhile. Barbara Cooney gives us the always-interesting life of Alice Rumphius from her seaport childhood to her grown-up travels and her triumphant old age, when she becomes "the lupine lady" who spreads flowers wherever she goes. The story comes full circle as the lively elderly Alice passes on her wisdom to her young niece and her friends. The illustrations add depth to the story and provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A perfect book for pre-readers and young readers!
Book Review: Wonderful Book! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a short biography of Barbara Conney's great Aunt Alice Rumphius, who grew up in New England, loved the sea, and wanted to visit faraway places. And also had an objective to do something to make the world more beautiful. I have always loved this book and have had that very same goal ever since the fifth grade when our homeroom teacher read it to us. The book concludes when Barbara Cooney the author says that her Aunt Alice (Miss Rumphius,) tells her that she too needs to do something to make the world more beautiful. But even SHE doesn't know yet what that could be. I personally think that she made the world more beautiful by writing and illustrated this masterpiece. Everybody young and old should have a copy.
Book Review: A book that will put a smile on your face! Summary: 5 Stars
" The Lupine Lady lives in a small house overlooking the sea."
This kind gentle hearted character has a strong spirit that lives on in everyone that reads this book.
Blue, purple, and rose-colored lupines grow in the illustrations of this story that covers a lifetime.
The Lupine Lady's grandfather is also a golden-hearted man and gives Mary (aka) The Lupine Lady three things to do in a lifetime. This story has a hint of a quest in it as the Lupine Lady try's to fulfill these three things that her grandfather has given her to do.
I recommend this book for all ages, and for people who like stories that put a smile on their faces.
Book Review: wonderful book about an inwardly strong woman Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a wonderful story about a woman who set a
course for her life and followed it. She told her grandfather
that she wanted to be like him when she grew up, and travel
and live by the sea. He let her know that there was more to
life than that and that she must also make that world a more
beautiful place. Follow Miss Rumphius as she fills her lifes
dreams and the wonderful way she makes life more beautiful
for all of us. Barabara Cooney also helps to make the world
a little gentler with this wonderful story you will want to
share with your daughter.
