Book Review: Best Book on the Subject for Non-Specialists

Most books on molecular biology present a dense and nearly impenetrable thicket of detailed information, which is great if you are going to go work in a molecular biology lab. For the rest of us, there is this book. As an instructor of Human Gross Anatomy, I do not generally deal with molecular biology on a day to day basis. I had a course in it in Graduate School back in the 1980's, but little other exposure. After attending a recent anatomical conference, I realized that I was pretty rusty on the subject. This book was the perfect refresher. It reviews major concepts and techniques in a crystal clear manner, without getting bogged down in excessive detail. The style is conversational and witty, and it is laced with irreverent (and sometimes politically incorrect) humor throughout. Given the pervasiveness and importance of molecular biology in the modern world, I hope the authors will continue with future editions, as this kind of book is badly needed. If they do, I would like to see them include a discussion of Hox genes, and perhaps a bit more on stem cell research. All in all, a great read.
