Book Reviews of Moleskine Ruled Notebook LargeBook Review: Legendary notebook with a bad quality paper Summary: 1 Stars
I bought Moleskine notebooks back in the good old days before the small French quality manufacturer got acquired by the current company (I think it's an Italian mega consortium who doesn't give a fly about notebooks or paper.) That resulted in the company moving their manufacturing to China and marketing the brand to keep high profit margins.
Now, who cares about the brand, when the most important part in a notebook is the paper quality and the bounding. I have to agree with most people who complain about the paper quality in the notebook: it's very low and subpart to even a composition book I can get at Office Depot for 1/10 of the price (See high profit margins above.) For a better quality artist notebook, I now use Canson (made in France) and for taking notes I switched a long time ago to Boorum & Pease (Columner books made in USA.)
Sorry Moleskine but your "legendary notebooks" (TM) are just plain... legendary.
Book Review: Reliable, Time & Field Tested. Economical. Simply The Best. Summary: 5 Stars
Review of Moleskine's Ruled Large Notebook.
I have been using Moleskine's products exclusively since 2004. In my demanding profession I use quite a few notebooks per year and I prefer the Large Ruled Notebook. The pages absorb ink without the need for blotting. In addition the pages seem to be low in acids (I won't say they are acid free) meaning they will not deteriorate quickly and are close to archival quality. The page weight is consistent with high quality stationary. Some used notebooks I have stored are over >six years in age and the paper is still colored and conditioned just like a new one. My notebooks have been bent, twisted and subjected to the elements. None has ever failed. I have seen many similar notebooks on the market but I have found that Moleskine prices their products to be fair and competitive for personal and business purposes. No one has to settle for less. Five stars without hesitation.
Book Review: Great notebook, but price needs to take a hit Summary: 4 Stars
Let me start off by saying that this is a fine notebook. Sure, as dozens of reviewers have pointed out, the paper could be better. But the construction is second to none. You really get a great product. The only real qualm I have (other than less than stellar binding) is the price. You get a notebook for 10 bucks. Not worth it. Especially when there are companies out there producing almost exactly the same thing (Piccadilly for instance) for four dollars less. Seriously, 40 percent discount on the exact same product. To me, that is the definition of marketing hype. Again, I really have no fault with this notebook. The product itself is fine. But the inflated prices have to be taken into account. I admit, I got one to see if the hype was founded. And, having tried both, I can promise you that it is not. Feel free to waste money on a brand, but if you just want the same quality product, you can go elsewhere to find it.
Book Review: good prduct Summary: 3 Stars
I've purchased Moleskine products many times over the years. So I don't expect anything different. I like the simple, matter of fact design without the uneccessary add ons many items from other companies seem to have.
My only issues this time are, on inside 2 pages, there were small stains. I don't know what it is and how it got there since the notebook was pre-wrapped. That's really nothing. However, this one does have a strong smell when I open it. Don't think I experienced this when I buy planners every year. I'm especially sensitive to smell and this is almost at a bothersome level.
I'd give it 5 stars as always if it weren't for this.
But all in all, good stuff!
Okay I took 1 more star off. The smell is more appalling than I thought. They really need to work on this.
I'm wondering if I should leave it outside, opened for a while hoping it would go away. :(
Book Review: I've gone through three, and although I'll probably keep buying, I'm not 100% sold Summary: 3 Stars
For the lack of a better option, I keep going back to the moleskine, although I wish there were viable alternatives.
I carry this around to sketch, draw up ideas, and take notes whenever I'm on the go. They've done okay for me in the past, and when I got my first one I was totally enamored with it. (Mainly due to the hype) As I went through my second, and eventually my third, I realized there were a few things I wouldn't mind changed.
First thing, the paper. I don't know what it is, but after toying with alternative notebooks, I realized that the paper in the moleskines could be better.
Actually, that's it. I'd really like it if the paper were better. The notebook is beautiful, and I always love to pull it out to begin writing in it. It's just that paper.
