Book Reviews of Monster Hunter InternationalBook Review: Becoming a Monster Hunter Summary: 5 Stars
Monster Hunter International (2009) is a fantasy novel. It seems to be set around 2004 in a timeline where monsters are a poorly held secret. Various types of undead -- from zombies to vampires -- abound, as does almost anything that has ever lurked on the silver screen. The monsters aren't cute and cuddly, but mean and vicious.
Monster Hunter International is a private company that specializes in hunting deadly monsters. It mostly employs people who have survived bad experiences with such monsters. There are other companies like MHI around the world.
The government pays bounties on monsters depending upon their threat level. But the government also has its own Monster Control Bureau. The Feds managed to shut down MHI for six years, but the situation became so bad that they were forced to reinstate MHI's license to hunt monsters.
In this novel, Owen Zastava Pitt is a man of mixed blood and cultures. He is a CPA for a Dallas company. His father is a former Special Forces snake-eater who has his children call him Sargeant. His mother is mostly Czech and loves to stuff her family with good food.
Earl Harbinger is a monster hunter for MHI. He makes the initial recruiting spiel to Owen. He doesn't like federal agents.
Julie Shackleford is a monster hunter for MHI. She comes along on the second recruiting spiel. She is the great-great-granddaughter of the MHI founder and Earl's niece. She is too brave for her own good.
In this story, Owen hates his boss. The man is lazy, incompetent and micromanages. He is also a newly turned werewolf.
Owen manages to stay alive when his boss attacks him, mainly because he is carrying, which is against company policy. He gets clawed and has a broken leg, but he is not bitten. So he doesn't turn into a were like his boss.
When he wakes up in the hospital, two federal agents are observing him. They are there to shoot him if he starts to turn. Its been five days without any signs of lycanthropy, so they are waiting for the results of a blood test. Meanwhile, Owen learns a few things about werewolves, starting with their existence.
Earl drops by while the Feds are present and gives Owen a business card with his phone number. After the Feds learn that the blood test has come up negative and leave the hospital, Owen concentrates on regaining his strength and agility. He ignores the business card.
Owen's mother and father come to the hospital on the day that he is released and move into his home while he is recuperating. His mother cooks him some of his favorite dishes and his father plays golf. On the day before they leave, his father asks him what really happened. Recalling the agent's warnings about spreading information on werewolves, Owen is finally forced to just quit answering his father's questions.
A few weeks after the incident, Earl and Julie come to visit. Julie tries to give a vague recruiting pitch for MHI, but Owen keeps asking very specific questions of Earl. He is amazed at the number of strange creatures that are encountered by MHI operatives.
Yet Owen is practically speechless whenever he has to say something to Julie. Her looks are good enough to scare him away from her, but she has so many good points, such as the M1911 style .45 caliber piece in her shoulder holster. Then he learns that she has a relationship with someone at MHI.
During this time, Owen is having strange dreams. While he is on the table and technically dead, he dreams about a tattooed man killing Nazi soldiers. Then he meets an old Jewish man in his dreams and receives some weird advice.
This tale slows down somewhat while Owen gets lectures on various types of monsters and hands-on training on weapons and unarmed combat. He gets to show off a little with a shotgun. Then he is selected for a live run and the action is almost continuous after that.
Owen learns that his dreams are really visions of things that actually happened or are happening. He has some out-of-body experiences and a vision of a horror called the Cursed One. Earl tells him to pass on anything that he learns in these dreams.
Owen ends up in the hospital more than once, but the monsters are dead before he passes out. He loses fights with a Fed, but never with a monster. Blood and violence are normal around the man. If only Owen was allowed to talk, he would make his father proud.
This work probably has little literary merit, but who cares. Most of the plot is drawn from monster movies. It is somewhat like Mike Hammer mixed with Anita Blake, but without the lust. The hero always seems to be tongue-tied and say the wrong things around the heroine.
Insofar as I can discover, this is the only novel by the author. Yet there may be a sequel. Read and enjoy!
Highly recommended for fans of paranormal thrillers, big powerful guns, and a bit of romance.
