Book Reviews of More Than a CarpenterBook Review: More than a Book Summary: 3 Stars
More Than a Carpenter Author: Josh McDowell This book is mainly about the Christian faith. The author talks about his understanding of some scriptures and convinces the reader that Jesus really did exist without `shoving religion down our throats.' While some authors just try to prove it to you, Josh shows you the facts and lets you decide if what you see if what you choose to believe. I think Josh wrote and excellent book. Well I guess I should just start off by thanking good ole Josh for writing such an understandable book. The words he was written in the pages have heavy meanings and can sway your thoughts about Jesus. He is a very convincing writer and uses good word choice to make his points clear. He doesn't `beat around the bush' and go off topic, he gets straight to the point, which is a nice change from the normal writing styles. Now all though he was straight to the point, it eventually turned repetitive. I always look for the author's opinion when I am reading. It helps me understand the book's purpose. He lays out the facts but doesn't give his own thoughts. Facts are nice but the truth is, if I wanted any more facts...I would be reading the BIBLE. I want to end this with a good word so here it is, I enjoyed the book and hope you all read it, everyone can learn something from it.
Book Review: hyper critical Summary: 4 Stars
I've read this book several times and I think it is a nice introduction to Christian Apologetics. I see many reviewers bashing this book's simplicity. Well, it was written to be that way. The information is presented with much more detail in Mcdowell's "evidence" books, this book is like an overview. The liar, lunatic, or Lord arguement is a valid one, if presented properly. Once you show the validity of the Scriptures, there are no other options. Legend has no place, as the new testament contains oral traditions that can be accurately dated to within 2 years of Jesus' crucification, and the whole new testament written by first hand witnesses or a close associate of a first hand witness. Some one claimed that a possibility was that a man named Jesus might have never existed. Just know, you are in the SEVERE minority here. Most skeptics even agree that he indeed existed. Anyways, there are better apologist out there, but this is an excellent introduction for a spiritual seeker( it can be read in a couple of hours). There is much more info out there if one truly wants to seek. Not everyone does, as it's rather uncomfortable to have their unbelief threatened, so they hide behind so called intellectual hurdles, putting all their effort into asking questions, instead of finding answers.
God bless
Book Review: Brings you closer to God! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the BEST book if you have any doubt whatsoever about the existance of God and how He came to us as Jesus. Author proves this with quotes from multiple references and thus leaves no doubt that it all actually happened. I was inspired to write this after reading the negative comment from a reviewer stating quite the opposite. I love the assertion that Saul's/Paul's achievements pale those of Napoleon into insignificance. He also puts to rest all those desiring a "scientific" proof, by correctly asserting that what you actually want is a legal historical proof. As a professional engineer, I need proof before I truly understand anything and this is the first book that I came accross to provide this. Author states that Christianity is an intelligent faith, and this book explains the "intelligent" part. The faith part of course is always there in your heart. I read this book while on Caribean vacation and consider this time to be the best part of my vacation. I am planning to pass this book to several people who are doubters taking religion on faith; with this book they no longer have to. My only wish is that I could find other books this well written and also that the author added many more pages and information (and charged more). I plan to re-read this book several times.
Book Review: A funny book full of temperament and silly arguments Summary: 2 Stars
It was the Czech translation that I read first (because the love of my life - who is a strong believer - gave it to me). I have seen several public talks of Josh McDowell (one of them was called Maximal Sex) and he is a very entertaining person. Unlike the other reviewers, I do believe that McDowell was not born as a Christian and that he was a very anti-religious person before. Such people with very superficial opinions become the most convinced converts. I find Christian liberalism boring and dishonest in a certain way so that McDowell's version of the fundamentalism is simple and foolish enough to look cute. The style of this book reminds me of the famous Sidney Harris's cartoon (here you have a lot of complicated formulae and logical thinking, here a miracle occurs, and these are the results). Jesus was not a Lunatic since he did not look insane. Such a nice person could not be a Liar either. Consequently, he had to be the God, of course. Sure. Maybe McDowell's grandson will claim the same about David Copperfield. I recommend this book to the readers who want to see how simple-minded and naive Christianity can be - and also to the people who share McDowell's temperament, belief and his level of the scientific rigour.
Book Review: This book acheived the opposite effect... Summary: 1 Stars
I guess this book is supposed to bring the unbeliever into Christianity. I can tell you it has had the opposite effect. I was given this book to read by a member of my campus' Campus Crusade for Christ. I must say I have never seen such a poorly written book. It offers no proof that I can see. The whole Lord, Liar, Lunatic argument is preposterous, if I don't believe in the bible than that argument disolves, and obviously most non-Christians don't believe the bible. I didn't know whether to laugh or feel concern for Mr. McDowell's sanity. I can not believe that McDowell was once not a Christian, he is certainly wrapped up in the trash they teach pretty completely now. I read this book at a time where I was questioning my Christian faith and this book just gave me more reason to leave. If this is the best that Christian apologetics can do then it's no wonder that people are fleeing the religion like rats from a sinking ship. I'm sure this will give the average Christian something to give to that poor heretic they see in school every day. The average Christian wrapped up in the Dogma and taught this stuff every day probably thinks of this book as a great work. For the rest of us, it's good for a laugh or two.
