Book Reviews of More Than a CarpenterBook Review: The Debate of Christ Summary: 4 Stars
Josh McDowell More Than a Carpenter Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Wheaton, Illinois. 1977 Special edition 128pp. 0-8423-4556-6For more than 2,000 years the identity of Jesus Christ has been debated throughout the world. In More Than a Carpenter, Josh McDowell presents compelling cases concerning the identity of Jesus Christ, the reliability of Biblical records, the reality of a resurrection, and prophesy. Josh supports his claims by using personal and recorded testimonies, the archaeological record, "legal-historical proof", as well as quoting over 100 well known sources. For the past 39 years, Josh McDowell has been documenting why he believes faith in Jesus Christ is intellectually feasible. He is currently active in presenting his evidence to universities all over the country and challenging individuals to seek the truth about his claims. This book is written for anyone wanting to search out either the greatest hoax or the greatest truth in all history.
Book Review: Deal With Jesus Summary: 5 Stars
This book forces the reader to deal with the person of Jesus. One cannot walk away from this book claiming indifference to Him. Too many people aimles run straight to Hell, avoiding the gracious offer of grace, by simply not thinking about it. Jesus came to earth claiming to be God. He and His apostles claimed that he died in order to take God's wrath stored up for us all. He claimed that if anybody would give up all hope except hope in His death for salvation from our sins, they would be saved and if He was rejected, they would be left to face God's justice in an eternity in Hell. You have to embrace Him and His claims or reject them. Indifference and moral living does not count for anything. For a Christian read this book. It may be possible that you have been worshipping an idol, ignorant of who Jesus really is, or perhaps your faith will be strengthened. If you're not a Christian, read this book to understand what you are rejecting, then I pray that you would turn to Him for salvation.
Book Review: Great book using the simplest logic Summary: 5 Stars
Using basic human logic McDowell is able to paint a very compelling portrait of the truth of Christianity. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone. It has certainly strengthened my faith. And as MCDowell points out, the gospels have FAR greater evidence for their accuracy than any other piece of historical literature. For the people who are criticizing this book, it is obvious that they either haven't really read it, or they just don't like Christianity and won't let themselves believe even if they come across logical arguements for it. I noticed people criticizing the "Liar, Lunatic, or Lord" portion of the book saying that McDowell falsely gives only 3 alternatives for a result. THERE CAN ONLY BE THESE THREE! If Jesus claimed to be the son of God, then either he was lying about it, he was nuts (meaning he only thought he was the son of God), or he was telling the truth! Tell me now folks.... what other "alternative" can there be?
Book Review: Simple Truths Summary: 4 Stars
More Than A Carpenter is a great introduction to Christian Apologetics. If you are one who has studied Christian Apologetics for a long time you will probably not pull away any new arguements from the book, but this book is still worth reading. Many times when engaging in conversation with people about Christianity we can have a tendency to over complicate things and at times try and flex our "Mind Muscle". I believe this is probably where this book will be the greatest help to me. There is something great about good, strong, SIMPLE arguements for the faith that help a conversation sometimes go more smoothly or allows the person whom you are talking to stay interested longer. This book briefly discusses areas such as the uniqueness of Jesus, the Resurrection of Jesus, Prophecy and a brief Testimony of Josh McDowell. No matter where you are, Christian, Skeptic, Atheist, this book is worth reading. It is short and easy reading. Very good over all!
Book Review: This book can't give you anything you don't already have. Summary: 2 Stars
In the interest of disclosure, I picked up "More Than a Carpenter" after being exhorted to do so by a lady I met on a plane. This isn't my religion, but I was open to learning more about it.
I was quite disappointed. I accept that logic and religion typically don't mix well, but McDowell does such a rotten job of it, that I came away from the book feeling like the entire thing was an insult to my intelligence. He grounds his arguments with statements like, "Nobody questioned Thucydides or Herodotus, so why are they questioning Jesus?" Possibly because neither Thucydides nor Herodotus proclaimed themselves the son of God.
Skip McDowell and pick up someone who didn't write a tract resembling a high school history paper (C.S. Lewis comes to mind). Or, if you like, pick it up and take a good look at the sort of thing you don't want to be the poster child for your beliefs.
