Book Reviews of More-With-Less CookbookBook Review: Replacement copy Summary: 5 Stars
After 20 years my first copy of this book just wore out. The thing I like best about this book is that the author considered recipes a jumping-off place. You get a good feel for how to alter recipes and use ingredients that you have on hand.
I took this book with me to SE Asia and was able to see how to translate the Asian recipes back to the original ingredients.
My new book is amazingly sturdy with a hard cover over the spiral coil so I think it will last longer. Nevertheless I will put clear contact paper over the special pages - substitutions and measuring equivalents to make sure this is the last copy I have to buy for myself. I plan to buy one for each of my children though.
Book Review: Don't leave home without it! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using the More-With-Less cookbook for more than 20 years, raising a family of 6 on a limited budget. I especially appreciate the philosophy behind this book: the earth's resources need to be shared more fairly, and we should not use more than we need. The More-With-Less cookbook has a large variety of recipes using wholesome basic ingredients and many recipes have become family favorites. The nutritional information helps cooks put together well balanced delicious and nutricious meals. I recently bought the Anniversary Edition for my daughter as she is about to leave home and start cooking for herself and roommates. No student should leave home without it!
Book Review: My Go-To Cookbook Summary: 5 Stars
This cookbook is GREAT!! I wore out my first copy, but love the spiral design of this version. I first received this book from a friend when I was going to college in central PA (smack dab in Amish country). The day I got the book, I read all the text and scanned the recipes. Now, 20 years later, I still look to this book for everything. The sugar cookies are very good & the recipe makes enough for holiday parties for all 3 of my kids' classes! I've learned many options for substitutions & additions from the tips that are include on each page - things like using 1/2 whole wheat flour instead of white. I love this book!
Book Review: My favorite cookbook Summary: 5 Stars
I am still using the first edition of this book which I purchased many years ago as a young bride. It has seen our family through times when money was very tight, and has been wonderful then, but has been even more wonderful during the years when money wasn't such a concern. Those are the times when it is easy to stray away from careful living and a "waste-not" philosophy. Periodically re-reading the thoughtful essay parts of More-With-Less always serves to remind me of the importance of living and cooking simply so that others may simply live. I was so saddened by Doris Janzen Longacre's untimely death.
Book Review: Excellent resource for cooking and more Summary: 4 Stars
I got the "More with Less" Cookbook when it first came out years ago, but had lost it over the past few moves. I remembered a bread recipe from this book that I had really loved, so I searched and found that they had just updated this excellent book. I found the recipe, and the bread was as good as I remembered. However, I'd forgotten the other incredible resources in this cookbook... about nutrition, about eating responsibly as a citizen of the world, about being good stewards of the world's resources, about healthy eating... PLUS all the wonderful recipes that are in this book.
I would recommend this highly!
