Book Reviews of Music Theory For Dummies, with Audio CD-ROMBook Review: Delightful overview of music theory Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a lapsed woodwind player who is learning the guitar. For some reason guitar players seem averse to learning music theory--maybe it's like math. For me, I wanted to figure out the why behind all the chords and scales. In grade school I had learned the basics of reading music but hadn't gone very far into the theory. This book was great--it's informal and concise style nicely bridged the gap between more scholarly texts and the simple method books. Yes, there are some errata, and the reader needs to be on their toes, but this is not a $100 textbook, so for me the errata was not a big deal. The books succeeds in getting the basic ideas across and its wide span of the topic gives a good jumping-off point for further in-depth study.
Book Review: For the shy, tone deaf, and untutotred Summary: 5 Stars
am starting the dummies and idiots route because i've never felt talented or competent about music. this book and the idiots' guide both come with CDs for the tone deaf or beginner or whatever would make a person want to go the dummies idiots route. this book is very helpful and i got lucky sending for a used copy in the like new category and it's perfectly clean and complete, CD intact, and though it may take years for me to develop any skills, it's an enriching happy pursuit.
Book Review: Great for starters or late commers to music theroy Summary: 5 Stars
I had thought my self how to play guitar and bass more than a decade ago, but never learned the fundamentals in which this book teaches. Although I haven't at this point read the whole book yet,I have gained understanding about how to read sheet music(I only learned tab), listening to the beat and counting music. Which is cool cause while I am at work listening to a song that sucks, I now utilize and practice counting the music. Anyhoo buy this book it does help.
Book Review: For the Music Theory Impaired Summary: 5 Stars
From a person who has always had a love for music, but a limited understanding of how it works, this book was very informative. As a beginner of the piano and acoustic guitar, this book has equipped me with some of the fundamentals of scales, chords, music composition, music reading, as well as helping me with sight reading.
For beginners, this book is a good start to truly learning music and applying it to playing music.
Book Review: As Shoan Sees It.... Summary: 5 Stars
I was gifted with the musical talent of playing by "ear". For over 20 years I tried to study music theory but I found it complicated and boring. Having read and actually "studied" Music Theory for Dummies I am now able to understand exactly what and why I am playing. Music Theory for Dummies changed my whole understanding and heightened my abilities. At the very least, Music Theory for Dummies is highly recommended.
