Book Reviews of My AntoniaBook Review: Poignant tale of Nebraska prairie life and relationship Summary: 5 Stars
My Antonia is a double bildungsroman: both narrator Jim Burden and titular Bohemian immigrant Antonia Shimerda grow and mature on the Nebraskan plains. Jim tells of his next door neighbors, the Shimerdas, and talks about their one fascinating daughter in particular, Antonia. Antonia and Jim quickly become companions and friends, with Jim appreciating Antonia's zest for life despite her poor conditions as an immigrant's daughter. Antonia's spirit persists throughout the whole novel, but soon, Jim and Antonia's paths split. In this story of love and friendship, Cather's backdrop of Nebraska countryside sets the tone for simplicity and genuine emotion.
Book Review: good read - very slow - sad Summary: 4 Stars
"My Antonia" was a book i was required to read for school so i picked it up and tried to read it. i had previously just read "Airhead", "Being Nikki" and had started "and then everything unraveled" so i was on a "fast read" roll and wanted another quick fun chick flick read. But to my "dismay" it was a slow read. at first i was bored but soon found my self just as intrigued as with the other three. i enjoyed this book but not in the same way as with the other books. It brings to life the lives of Jim and his friends and i recommend this. it is more in depth than what i expected and is slightly depressing while being touching.
Book Review: Beautiful writing, but the lack of plot means it's not for everyone Summary: 4 Stars
I loved this story of a time and place that is gone. It's elegiac and fond, and beautifully written. Characters are sketched out sparsely but intact, and her phrasing made me gasp with pleasure at times.
But it has no plot. I cringe to think that children might be forced to read this. People who want to learn how to write should read this - Willa Cather writes beautifully. People who like character sketches or prose that captures a time and place unknown to them will like this. Things happen, as they do in a life. But not everything that happens is interesting (as in life.)
Book Review: Simple American prose Summary: 4 Stars
This book was a lovely read because of the simplicity of the writing. It was rich, and descriptive and the imagery was evocative of the times of which it described. The landscape was as rich a character as the characters themselves and I found myself enjoying the read because of it. I in no way mean to dismiss this as an easy read, or a simple read, it was just a refreshing book to come to after reading so many best sellers. It is a great book for 15 years and up.
Book Review: Boring. . Summary: 1 Stars
This book is quite literally the most boring book I have ever read. This book has absolutley no plot whatsoever. I read to page five and wanted to put the book down and never see it again. Unfortunately I had to finish the book since I was forced to read it for my English class. Do not waste your money on this horrible excuse for a book.
