Book Reviews of My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir

Book Review: Transparent
Summary: 4 Stars

Clarence Thomas gives us an unvarnished view of his painful and often difficult childhood. How does a child recover from abandonment of his father and the incompetence of his mother? This is not, unfortunately, an uncommon story. But Clarence and his brother had a strong set of grandparents to give them support and direction. Thomas gives full credit to this man who stepped into the shoes that his father should have worn. His grandparents sacrificed to send the boys to a catholic school so they could receive a real education. They took the boys out of the city in the summers so there would be no time to hang about the trashy hoodlum types. Thomas recognizes what makes a father is not just an accident of nature, but time and love. It was this love that enabled him to reach for the stars in his life and to overcome the unfair viciousness he encountered as an adult. He does not cover up his own shortcomings, but gives a complete picture of his personal growth.

Book Review: Insight into Justice Thomas
Summary: 4 Stars

Clarence Thomas writes candidly and honestly about his life experiences. He shares both the good and the bad. He is both inspiring and able to admit to his mistakes. Even those who do not share his views can relate to some part of the justice's experiences. Thomas offers an intimate view into his childhood, and the trials and consequences he endured as an African-American raised in the Deep South. His journey from Savannah, Georgia to the highest court in the land is truly incredible, regardless of one's beliefs. Thomas is honest and very matter-of-fact, and doesn't shy away from delicate topics. In addition, his story is heartwarming and endearing. He presents a rare insight into his personal life and introduces us to the ones who made him who he is.

Book Review: Listen to the audio version, it's wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

I recommend the audio book. Justice Thomas narrates it. He has a deep, clear, compelling voice which adds a richness that, I believe, you may not get by reading it. I've listened to autobiographies of several other well-know people and was disappointed that they hired someone else to narrate their life's story. For Justice Thomas to actually narrate it himself automatically raises it up a notch in my eyes. On top of that, his story is interesting.

Book Review: Outstanding
Summary: 5 Stars

It's amazing that Clarence Thomas is ignored by most as a black role model. He grew up dirt poor in jim crow era georgia, yet became a success through hard work and a sense of responsibility. He makes a strong case for why he feels affirmative action and other race based quotas do more harm than good. I recommend this book for fellow african americans who are tired of the media telling us we should look up to jesse jackson and al sharpton.

Book Review: Moving and insightful
Summary: 5 Stars

My Grandfather's Son goes well beyond detailing one remarkable man's journey. Justice Thomas has preserved a unique perspective on the American experience during six decades of extraordinary changes. This book is an excellent use of your time whatever you think you already know about this man.
