Book Reviews of NLP: The New Technology of AchievementBook Review: Not All It's cracked Up To Be Summary: 2 Stars
Despite the hype generated by the cult following behind NLP, you won't find much in it that's all that different from other self-help material out there. It goes over most of the same stuff that other self-help disciplines do, such as setting goals, visualizing yourself being successful, listening as opposed to talking in order to establish good communication, using rapport to build good relationships with people, making other people a part of your goals, etc. I gave this book two stars because some of the techniques are genuinely unique, such as reframing. However, I still find nothing in this book that warrants calling NLP "the evolution in human cognition and intelligence." While the techniques in this book fall under the so-called phenomenon of Nerou-Linguistic Programming, it would be a wild exaggeration to say that this book will teach you to program your mind to exhibit actions and feelings that you want to do and feel, as some one would program a computer, as both the name and claims of this book would suggest. What you can expect, are some exercises in creative visualization that will help you put some difficult areas of your life in perspective. What you can not expect, is a magic switch that will automatically turn the creative and positive facets of your mind on, while magically turning the self-defeating facets of your mind off. If you are interested in NLP, you should recognize it for what it is, which is an amalgamation of all the existing self-help material out there, with some already well known psychological theory thrown in. Also, don't be fooled by the unique sounding technical terms that the authors throws in. These are well known pychological phenomenon that have been disguised with "NLP-esque" sounding names. Examples include "anchoring" (conditioning), and "parts" (subconscioussness.)
Keep in mind that the impression I got from NLP was made by this book. The material produced by NLPs so-called founders, Bandler and Grinder, may contain more original and more helpful material.
Book Review: Never mind that last guy the book is good Summary: 4 Stars
First let me make a statement about the last reviewers objections. First, hey nobody in NLP claims that this stuff is all air-tight and scientific. "The map is not the territory." This is one way of saying BS is fine if its a useful model. Second, this is not a re-hash of the tremendous book Psycho-Cybernetics in which Maltz has us spend 30 days a night visualizing ourselves with all the behaviors, emotions, and achievments we wish we would have in order to supply a new self-image to our instinctive "success mechanism". (Of course there are many other very interesting ideas and recommendations in that book.) The exercises in this book has us make movies or pictures in our mind, experiment with shifting parameters (submodalities) like size, color, brightness, speed, and border to alter our way we feel about things. As another example it has us rapidly blend pictures from a cue condition to a desired self image (swish pattern). Now I must mention that the Review Synopsis above doesnt seem to describe this book at all to me. Business mettings? Maybe a little. Mostly this book is a self-help book for people who are not really sick in the head but would like to improve their motivation, goal reaching, control over their emotions, persuasiveness, and self-image. The last reviewers objection that there is a lot of mumbo jumbo is a good point. It turns me a little off too... but you can also make the same point about other great self-help books like Psycho-Cybernetics or Think and Grow Rich which believe that there is mystical knowledge floating around in space waiting to be picked up by a tuned-in unconscious mind. Just skip the obvious nonsense. If that kind of BS really bothers you, then you can read Tony Robbins, but on the other hand this book I think is better organized and more fun than his.
Book Review: CLOYING, ANNOYING, AND CONDESCENDING Summary: 2 Stars
I am giving this book two stars- but I begrudge it the second one. It has to be two because it DOES contain the information I bought it for. But I wish I could in good conscience give it one single star- or fewer- because on nearly every page, there's something that makes me want to reach through the book and slap the writers.
I don't enjoy books that effuse with frothy enthusiasm so trillingly that it undercuts the information it's supposed to deliver. And I don't enjoy books where the authors seem to be addressing me and my curiosity about the topic in a sugary voice as if I am a Kindergartner.
So I am not enjoying this book. At all.
I wish that before I'd purchased this book I'd seen the dedication page. It reads: "Dedicated to the joyful heart and soaring spirit of every child reaching for a greater world, especially in yourself."
Now, friends- I sincerely hope your heart is joyful and that your spirit soars. But that sugary prose in the dedication would have tipped me off about what was ahead- and I'd have run for the hills. To get to the information, you have to deal with the authors achingly precious hopes for this book to change your life.
Ever have a cappucino that was all foam with only a little sip of coffee at the bottom of the cup? Remember how you raised the paper cup to your lips and there wasn't anything to swig? Remember the sense that you'd just been ripped off?
Yeah. It's a lot like that.
If you like non-fiction delivered to you like a bed-time story, maybe you'll like this book. But if not-- don't buy this book. Run very fast to the next selection.
If I can stop even one person from buying this book, it was worth my time to write this review.

Book Review: Learning about NLP and Ferocious Living Summary: 4 Stars
I found this book to be excellent for the beginning neophyte who wants to learn about basics and concepts within NLP. It will prepare you for the Seminar and create specific outcome for you. NLP was made popular by Richard Bandler and Tony Robbin in the 70s and 80s. This is a good reference for the other NLP books out there in bookstores and on the web. The Comprehensive team really puts up a great primer for beginners who want to live elegantly and with grace and ease. This book is a must read for educators, teachers, social workers, psychologists who never heard of nlp?, doctors who want to utilize specific outcome, salespeople who want to better vendors and real estate people who want to increase the number of listing they can go for. I would highly recommend this for graduate students in an MBA Program or specifically Human Resource Professionals who want to be better trainers before signing up for a training with this team, Rex Sikes of Idea Seminars or even Richard Bandler's trainings at 1st Institute. I've given a few copies to some of my friends. Being a Practitioner myself of NLP."The Map is Not the Territory." -1st NLP Presupposition This is not for Tony Robbin fans; this is the pure stuff. It's not just a trail of techniques. It's about ferocious living and curiousity.
