Book Review: Handy Field Guide + Extras
Summary: 4 Stars
This is an absolute must for anyone just starting out collecting rocks and minerals. Not sure about advanced Rock Hounds because I am a total n00b. Besides information on just about every kind of mineral, gemstone, and rock in North America it also gives brief overviews on the equipment needed, and the different types of collections and how to record your "finds". The pictures are laid out by color then by type, which makes for easy look-up in the field. I take this guide with me everywhere. The Audubon Field Guide series has been around for a long time and never disappoints. I also recommend their guide to North American Trees, Fossils and Birds. Think of these small guides as your link to "Old Knowledge", the forgotten lore of the Earth. This is the kind of stuff you should learn as a kid but they save for later when you care more about beer and coeds. I only give it 4 out 5 due to my belief that these books should be just a tad wider, with space for notations.
