Book Reviews of Nature GirlBook Review: Dismal Key Summary: 3 Stars
The story of "Nature Girl" unfolds through four groups of characters;
1. Honey Santana - the mentally unstable main character; Fry - her son: and Skinner - her ex-husband.
2. Boyd Shreave and his mistress Eugenie - telemarketers who called the wrong person: Dealy - private detective following them on the bill of Lily Shreave - Boyd's wife who is getting off on the videos Dealy is providing her.
3. Sammy Tigertail - half-breed Seminole Indian who has forsaken his white heritage; Gillian - co-ed "hostage" of Sammy.
4. Louis Pieback - fishmonger and low-life stalker of Honey.
Hiaasen's normally witty and commentative stories set him apart. In this book, his commentary is based on the destruction (from white people interests in Florida) and rebirth (through casinos) of the Florida Native American people. The story ensues when Texas telemarketer Boyd calls Honey during dinner and gets into derrogatory name calling. Honey hatches a scheme to bring Boyd to Florida to teach him a lesson and change his life view. Meanwhile, Lily Shreave has hired PI Dealy to get more and more invasive footage of the cheating Boyd. Meanwhile meanwhile, Sammy seeks solace in the Ten Thousand Islands of Florida's Everglades to hide out after a man dies on an airboat trip. Unfortunately for Sammy, he continually gains new 'hostages' as the story goes on. Meanwhile x3, Louis Pieback is following Honey around in hopes of 'bagging' her. A series of predictable coincidences ensue and all parties end up on Dismal Key for the resolving of the story.
It's somewhat fitting that the main setting for the book is Dismal Key/Island as the book is somewhat dismal in comparison to his other novels. The book runs 399 pages but honestly the last 75+ pages didn't need to be there as it just goes on and on and on... You just get tired of the book after 300 pages and the ending drags out to a fairly boring conclusion. That mixed with a lackluster plot and forced semi-preachy history lesson drops the enjoyment value of the book. However, for the most part, I did enjoy the story even though it didn't end quite as well as his other stories. Having a cameo by former cross-book character Skink could have added a lot to this book.
Summary of Nature GirlFrom "the funniest important writer in America" (Miami Herald) comes a tale that is gleefully zany and incisively sharp and now available in trade paperback for the first time.
