Book Reviews of Nikon D200 Digital Field GuideBook Review: Generic photo guide clevery packaged as specific camera tutorial Summary: 1 Stars
Buyer Beware! This slick-looking D200 guide is merely a generic guide to photography with a few early chapters shoved in that tell you very, very basic information about the particular model. It's about has helpful as pressing F1 during a windows application (i.e. "select one of the four options then press ENTER").
This is not the camera guide you need. It doesn't matter whether you're a newbie or very experienced, there are better books out there. The people that put these books together do some sort of assembly line operation where every time a new camera comes out, they rewrite the first few chapters and bundle a majority of prewritten pages that have nothing to do with your camera. Don't expect the specific portions relative to your camera model to be helpful either. The manual clearly states it doesn't intend to re-cover material in the original Nikon manual, so basically, it's like hearing Cliff Claven from Cheers tell you how your camera works. Utterly useless.
Book Review: Quality Book with Good Information Summary: 4 Stars
With any new camera, it becomes difficult to try and understand all of the features and functions. The manual that comes with the camera just does not seem sufficient to give all of the details. The Nikon D200 Field Guild is a great companion to the owners manual as it provides details and real world examples of how features should be set or at a minimum what they do. After a few frustrating picture taking experiences, I decided to purchase this book. Since reading it, I feel my understanding of how the camera should be set has been dramatically enhanced as has my confidence. If you are new to the Nikon D200 or if you are just not sure what all the capabilities are for this camera I would suggest picking up a copy of the Field Guide. I think you will appreciate the ease of reading and the depth of content it provides. Ultimately it will increase your confidence in using the camera which should result in better pictures.
Book Review: I'd give this book a C- Summary: 2 Stars
I agree with many of the other less than stellar reviews of this book. It is just a little better than the owners manual. It is frustrating because the index is not very exhaustive. For instance one cannot find the topic "time exposures". The book is not very cohesive because it frequently refers you to another chapter rather than explain how two topics interrelate. One would think that before publishing a book like this the author would put it before a focus group (no pun intended, haha) to see what the average new Nikon D200 owner would say about it and then make improvements so readers would end up getting the most out of the book. When this book explains how it often fails to explain why and when this book explains why it often fails to explain how. In many ways it creates more questions than it answers. I do not wish to sound uncharitable but this book is often more frustrating than helpful.
Book Review: Review of the Nikon D200 Digital Field Guide Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first review I have offered for a book on Amazon, but I felt compelled to comment on the excellent quality of this Nikon D200 Digital Field Guide. Although I am new to photography, I felt that the D200 offered the most features for the money and I purchased it, not really knowing how to use the camera.
I got this book the same day. It has helped me learn about the camera very quickly, particularly all the buttons and dials that can easily confuse a new owner. There is also a large amount of information on photography with the D200, and examples of the types of photos you can take with it. I feel the length of this book is just right. It contains all that you must understand about the D200 camera, and additional information that will be of value once you have had more experience with the camera. It is a perfect match for the fine camera.
Book Review: Pure meat. Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike the reviewer who uses a Spanish obscenity for his user name, I have read this book, and find it to be filled with solid information. The reviewer apparently gets his jollies from trashing authors, as all four of his reviews offer ridiculous criticisms of best-selling books.
On the other hand, I have actually purchased and read this book, and find it to be filled with useful information about the Nikon D200. It's clear, concise, and provides complete explanations of the D200's controls, menus settings, and features, along with advice on how to use this advanced camera to best advantage.
I enjoyed this author's earlier book on the D70, and now that I have upgraded to the D200 I am glad that a similar book with more depth has been made available for my new camera. If you own the D200, you need this book.
