Book Reviews of Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide

Book Review: Great addition to the manual!
Summary: 5 Stars

The manual that comes with the D50 tells you how to find the buttons that perform various functions. This book tells you exactly what those functions are for, why you need to use them, and then helps you apply what you've learned to taking better photos. Unlike the manual, this book comes with large full-color photos that show exactly where everything is, so you don't have to hunt through a confusing drawing with a million labels on it.

But the best part of this book is not the chapters in the front that introduce you to the D50. The real value comes from the photographic basics and guidance on applying those basics. I also liked the section on choosing lenses.

Book Review: Essential guidebook for the D50
Summary: 5 Stars

This guidebook for the D50 should be in the camera bag of every owner of the Nikon D50 digital single lens reflex. This camera is quite complex to operate, and the manual furnished with it is not much help in learning all the features and controls. The Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide has large, clear, well-labeled photographs showing each part of the camera, and detailed desciptions of what the various controls do. Later on, you'll find a huge chapter, which is about one-third of the book, that provides recommended settings for taking pictures in different common shooting environments.

Anyone who really wants to learn how to use the D50 should get this book.

Book Review: Very Good Introduction to the Nikon D50
Summary: 4 Stars

David Busch's book provides a step beyond the Nikon manual for the D50. Product manuals are often sketchy at best so Busch's input fills out the manual information. In addition, Busch has created a sizable series of field exercises which demonstrate the diverse ways to use the equipment in photographing a range of subjects. The user is challanged to get acceptable results and experience. For someone who is transitioning from film to digital photography, Busch offers insight into the differences/similarities of the two photographic media. The book is well worth the price. It can be an ongoing reference as different subject matter is selected by the camera owner.

Book Review: Primo introduction to D50 and Photography
Summary: 5 Stars

I received a D50 as an early Christmas present and this book along with it, and both are excellent! This book has all the introduction I need to this great camera, including a Quick Start that got me up and shooting within minutes of opening the box! I also loved the full discriptions of each feature of the camera.

I expect I will learn all the features of the D50 within a few weeks, but will still find the Field Guide very useful because of the information on how to shoot different types of pictures such as fireworks (not till July 4) landscapes, sports, and other kinds. This is a great book for any new D50 camera owner.

Book Review: Forget the DVDs and other books -- this is the one!
Summary: 5 Stars

I thumbed through some of the other books on using the D50, and bought a DVD. Forget them! You can't use a DVD in the field, but you can take this useful guidebook with you anywhere. It makes a perfect complement to the manual that comes with the D50. This book explains all the settings and controls that the Nikon manual buries under tons of detail. But more importantly, it has solid advice for taking pictures under a variety of situations that the manual ignores entirely. This book: much more useful. Other resources: not as good. The photographs are inspiring, too.
