Book Reviews of Nikon D50 Digital Field GuideBook Review: Must-have! Summary: 5 Stars
Another great book from David Busch! I odered my new Nikon D50 online and received it early last week. Then I bought this book, which is magnitudes better than the manual that comes with the camera. The guidance for configuring the D50's complex menu of options is superb, with plenty of "when to use" and "when not to use" information. The scores of techniques in chapter 6 are full of good ideas, and the color photos throughout the pages are incredibly informative -- and sometimes inspirational. This book should be standard issue with every D50.
Book Review: Did the job Summary: 4 Stars
Is this THE perfect book to learn the operation of the D50? Probably not, but for me, it did the job. I had a limited amount of time after purchasing the D50, to learn it's operation before my sister's wedding. After looking through the owner's guide that came with the camera, I knew that wasn't the tool to do the job. This "field manual" had me up to speed
in no time. Yes, about half the book is devoted to basic photography that
applies to any SLR, but the meat of the book is THE tool to quick mastery
of D50 operation.
Book Review: My Second Favorite Christmas Gift Summary: 5 Stars
My first favorite gift this year is the Nikon SB-600 flash unit to go with the Nikon D50 I bought earlier. However, this book, which has lots of cool ideas I can put to work using the SB-600, is not far behind. I already had some months' experience with the camera before I received this book, but I see that there was a lot more for me to learn, and I've been studying it intently. It seems clear and easy to understand, and the photos section is spectacular. This book is the second-best accessory you can buy for your D50 camera!
Book Review: Worth every raha! Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, April Fool's Day exists in Finland, too, introduced there by the immortal Conan O'Brien! Actually, I found almost no mistakes in this book, which was filled with highly accurate, highly useful advice for taking pictures under a variety of conditions. While it's not excessively technical, this Field Guide does provide you with everything you need to know to begin taking excellent photos with your Nikon D50. Even admitted beginner photographers will agree that too little knowledge is a dangerous thing!
Book Review: Quite a few errors... Summary: 3 Stars
I'm only through Chapter 1 of this book and have already found a few errors. For example, page 16 states that the Flash multi-button (figure 1.4) causes the built-in electronic flash to pop-up. Not true - depends on your mode dial settings! Same with the Exposure compensation button. Plus a photo caption in the early pages describes a different lens.
Seems like the author copied and pasted a lot of the contents of this book from his D70 field guide... Still, a good value for the money.
